This course is designed for English Learners at the Beginning - Developing Levels of English language profi ciency, as defi ned in the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) English Language Profi ciency Performance Defi nitions adopted by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). ESL II focus is on the development of students’ communication skills for social and instructional purposes, as well as their ability to communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in all core subject areas. It provides sequential language development in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. ESL II – Two Period is based on intentional instruction with consistent exposure to complex texts, high levels of analytical thinking, exposure to the history and culture of the United States, and diff erentiated to meet the language needs of students. ESL II – Two Period curriculum is aligned to WIDA and Common Core State Standards and off ers an extra period of support to further develop English Learners’ Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills. One period is counted as an ELA credit and the other as a career education or elective credit. ESL instruction is a required component of services for English learners.

Prerequisites: Enrollment in a TBE and/or TPI Program, composite literacy profi ciency level of 2.0-2.9 on the W-APT screener or ACCESS annual assessment and or successful Completion of ESL I.E Credit Type: 1 credit toward any English, 1 credit toward Career Ed or Elective
