Academic Allies are paired with a teacher at IBW to support students within their classroom. Allies are role models to their peers. They work with individual students or small groups. These 10th-12th grade students support any of the following programs: Intensive Skills Classrooms, multilingual learner classes, core classes and electives. In addition to a fantastic leadership opportunity, this is a GREAT chance to document volunteer hours and complete a CRLE as students prepare for college and future careers. Students will reflect on their learning throughout the year through journal assignments. Host classroom teachers will complete quarterly feedback forms, and students will meet once quarterly with the AA teacher to review progress.

Students receive specially designed instruction based on their IEP’s and support for general education classes. Students receive elective credit toward a standard or modified high school diploma for successful completion of the course. Academic support activities may include: Individualized and/or small group direct instruction in the basic skills of reading, writing, and math; Study skills instruction is offered in the Academic Support class and can be scheduled as needed; Consultative support services in content area classes such as math, English, health, science, and social studies; Assistance and advocacy with program development, scheduling, and post-graduation (transition) planning; Case management of Individualized Education Plans

Students implement their acquired knowledge of scene work, the audition process, and the process of choosing monologues that best showcase their talents. Students advance their characterization techniques and broaden their skills as actors. Students study film acting and collaborate to produce a short film. <br /><br />Prerequisite: Acting: Intermediate 3-4.

Students explore the craft of acting through theatre games, improvisation, mindfulness, and scene work. Students develop their vocal and physical expressions, practicing to become comfortable on stage and performing in front of others. Activities may include teamwork, movement, voice, play and character analysis, scene work, monologues, audition/interview skills, theatre history, and play reviews.

Students further explore the craft of acting and build a basic understanding of the audition process. Students learn characterization techniques and broaden their skills as actors. <br /><br />Prerequisite: Acting: Beginning 1-2.

The following support class is taken in conjunction with the Advanced Algebra and with the same teacher. Students will have math everyday with this format.

Students learn about modeling data and problem situations with functions, specifically linear quadratic, polynomial, exponential, rational, radical, and logarithmic functions. They are also introduced to complex numbers and problems in trigonometry and statistics. Students work both individually and in groups to solve problems, apply mathematics, and communicate their reasoning.

Building on the foundations of Introduction to Leadership, this course dives deeper into the strategies and skills needed to create meaningful change within Ida B. Wells High School and beyond. Together, we’ll explore advanced leadership concepts, such as ethical decision-making, systems thinking, and leading with empathy and kindness. Students will actively work to address real challenges in our school and community by designing events and initiatives that prioritize inclusivity, kindness, and school pride. As leaders, students will take on roles that allow them to collaborate across diverse groups, plan large-scale events such as assemblies and fundraisers, and mentor their peers. This course focuses on cultivating vulnerability, integrity, and courage, empowering students to lead authentically while fostering a stronger, more connected school community.

Got marketing on the brain? Want to put those creative skills to the test? Advertising is the next step in your journey through the Ida B. Wells Marketing Program of Study. In this course students will learn about the history of advertising, the fundamental principles of messaging and brand storytelling, traditional and digital media vehicles, and the art of the creative brief. The work of great agencies ranging from Wieden + Kennedy to NY’s Droga5 to London’s Saatchi & Saatchi will be examined and appreciated. This high energy class will provide an opportunity for students to complete the Marketing Program of Study and apply their marketing skills they have gained and developed in their previous marketing courses.

AP Biology studies the core scientific principles, theories, and processes that govern living organisms and biological systems. Students will engage in hands-on laboratory work to investigate natural phenomena. This course prepares students for the AP exam. Those who attain successful scores on the exam may receive college credit.

In this introductory college-level calculus course, students cultivate their understanding of differential and integral calculus by engaging with real-world problems represented graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally. Students use definitions and theorems to build arguments and justify conclusions as they explore concepts such as change, limits, and the analysis of functions.
