The High School Placement Test, or HSPT, is an exam given to 8th grade students who are applying to certain Catholic schools. The scores on the exam determine admission and scholarships. The HSPT is 2 hours and 20 minutes long. It contains 298 questions that include the following academic sections: quantitative, reading, verbal, language skills, and mathematics. The test also offers optional exams in science, mechanical aptitude, and Catholic Religion. Getting help for this test might enhance your child's chances of being accepted by a school of their liking. Varsity Tutors could help you locate an independent tutor in Arlington experienced in helping students prepare for the HSPT.

Varsity Tutors can find you an expert HSPT tutor in Arlington, VA, who can develop a study plan that is designed specifically with your child in mind. There is no passing or failing score on the exam. However, a "good score" is at the discretion of the potential school. If your child gets a low score because they find a certain section of the quiz difficult, it could lower their chances of being accepted into their desired school. Your child's tutor will speak with them to determine which section worries or scares them, then guide them step-by-step through the problem solving process. Is your child a perfectionist? Your child's tutor will remind them that there is no penalty for wrong answers on this test and that it's okay to make mistakes. While some schools and other sources provide practice tests, they're usually for one-time use, and students are expected to work on them alone. A tutor can provide practice exams for your child to use as many times as necessary.

HSPT Tutoring review by Connor in Arlington, TX
The student and I did a review of testing strategies for math and quantitative reasoning, and then we did practice problems for all four sections. I took note of his performance in each section, and saw that he has improved in his ability to dissect complex words. I left him to practice vocab. I have no other concerns.

HSPT Tutoring review by Julia in Arlington, TX
We started our session by reviewing and going over new vocabulary words and their meaning. We circled back a few times throughout the session to see if the boys were absorbing the material. We then switched gears and delved into the analogy portion of the test. We used some of the examples and quiz questions as a means to practice. There is a pretty significant amount of crossover between the vocab and analogy questions. I suggested getting some vocabulary flash cards to practice the words they were unsure of.

I specifically covered the language section and verbal section of the test. I give the student extensive homework on both of these sections as these are the only 2 out of the 5 sections the test has in which the student needs the most help on. She is stellar on the other 3 (only gets a couple wrong maximum). She does have progress but I am noticing though she may know what the words mean she is making incorrect analogies so I told her to write the analogies for the next assignments for greater clarity. I have given her extensive homework on these two sections.

Today we reviewed problems on the proctored test that the student took on Saturday. We reviewed strategies for reading comprehension, simplifying numbers, solving three statement problems, and eliminating incorrect answers. We also reviewed averages, exponents, radicals, and cross-multiplication. I have sent the patents an email summarizing the many strategies the student could employ to improve his score.

HSPT Tutoring review by Zachary in Arlington, TX
The student and I began by reviewing the quantitative concepts that we went over on Wednesday. She was able to answer most of the practice questions accurately and efficiently. We did a little additional practice of translating word problems into algebraic equations. We then did a brief review of general test strategies for each section. Next, we focused on the math section that she completed last week. When looking at the questions she missed, we identified new concepts as well as quicker ways of answering questions she was familiar with.

HSPT Tutoring review by Mary in Arlington, TX
Today we did verbal and quantitative review. I timed the student on a verbal section, and he finished with about a minute and a half left, which was good. Last time, he was a little more pressed for time. Next time, I want to time him on quantitative reasoning because I think he does spend a little too much time on a lot of questions. I gave him a packet of vocab words and roots to make flashcards for.
