After completing a two year service as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa, I earned my teaching credentials in both English and Special Education and taught in Philadelphia for four years. I recently relocated to sunny San Diego with my Master's degree in Education in hand and tutoring experience under my belt. English and Math are my strong suits, and I'm excited to put my tutoring skills to use through Varsity Tutors.

Math and science can be frustrating and intimidating to many people, and my objective is to help you overcome any hurdles your may have in these subjects in order to achieve your academic and career goals.Having received my Bachelors of Science in Physics from California State University, Long Beach, I have a passion for science and math which I love to transmit to other people, whether they be curious laymen, fellow students, or tutees. While earning my degree I had the opportunity of taking part in undergrad research at my university, and the privilege of participating in a student internship program at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. This experience has given me some perspective in appreciating the scope and possibilities in science. But while doing so I have also practiced my other passion--instruction and education in this field and related subjects by working as a tutor for high school students in the subjects of math, science, and in test preparation. I also have experience in a job after graduation as a tutor of university students in college level courses, from remedial math and science classes to more advanced second and third year physics courses. After several years working as a laboratory technician at a fuel cell research and design company, I am returning to this latter passion as I pursue a teaching credential program at the University of Dominguez Hills. In my view, the best approach to teaching is not one that just instructs you in procedures by rote memorization and repetition (although these may be necessary and useful in achieving success), but also one that guides you to acquire the needed tools and critical thinking skills to not only learn the procedures needed for math, science, or standardized tests, but to also hopefully understand the subject sufficiently to develop your own techniques in many different situations, or to possibly apply them in your area your interest. This is achieved by identifying your level of understanding, making sure you know or learn any needed background information, and to also sometimes explain and give you an insight into the motivation for the formulas, techniques or procedures pertaining to the subject at hand, and relating them to different examples and applications in real life in order to make them less abstract. In whichever approach I may take, in the end my aim is to demystify and make these subjects less intimidating to you, since I more than likely have gone through similar frustrations in my education.

I am a graduate from the Northwestern University School of Law and am in my fifth year of practicing law in California. I am originally from the Los Angeles area and attended UCLA for my undergraduate degree in political science. Since graduating law school, I worked at both a major law firm and a small law firm until I was appointed as an attorney for a federal judge (a.k.a. “law clerk” position). I primarily tutor clients for LSAT preparation. I scored in the 99th percentile when I took the LSAT exam, and have since refined my strategies that are crucial to a successful LSAT score. My ultimate goal is that my students will score even higher than I scored, and I look forward to observing the progress and success of each of my clients. In my free time, I like to spend time outdoors playing tennis, jogging, hiking, and meeting with friends. I also love to travel and appreciate the uniqueness that each city--much like each person--has to offer. I feel my easy going nature and curiosity for life will rub off on my clients, and possibly even help them enjoy the sometimes daunting experience of taking the LSAT.

I am graduate of Cornell University with a B.S. in Hotel Administration. Currently, I am a Masters student at the University of Southern California at the Rossier School of Education. Since graduating from Cornell, I have worked as a tutor and teacher's assistant with a focus in English, Spanish, French, and Algebra 1. I have worked with students of all ages and backgrounds from elementary education to adults improving business writing or learning Spanish from scratch. I have a passion for language and enjoy sharing that passion with others. My favorite subject to tutor is Spanish because I know that learning a new language can be daunting, and I like helping students overcome that feeling. I hold my students to high standards and ensure that I work to give them the support and guidance they need to achieve those standards. I am patient and will employ a variety of strategies to ensure my students relate to and understand the material we are working on. When I am not tutoring, I love dancing, hiking with my dog, and exercising my creativity.

I love working with students one-on-one because it's possible to get to the bottom of whatever is challenging them and help them conquer it. I love to see the light-bulbs go on when they finally understand something or realize what they know. It's also fun to build rapport with young people and help them discover the joy of learning.I have over ten years of teaching experience in all subjects: as a full-time elementary school teacher, a substitute in all grades, and a summer-school teacher doing math review with high school freshmen. I have also tutored in French and English as a second language and helped college students and adults with revising and editing their writing.I have a current teaching credential from the State of California, a master's degree in education from U.C.L.A., and a bachelor's degree in French from U.C. Berkeley.

ACT Science Tutor • +24 Subjects
I have attended four separate colleges since I was 15 years old and have taken over 30 courses in the sciences, humanities, and liberal arts. I am currently a Junior at UCSB working towards a degree in Bio-psychology, following the Pre-Medical route! I have tutored both formally during high school and informally during my college years. I am comfortable teaching all ages and those who are eager to learn. I love tutoring in a more conversational matter and talking through problems rather than lecture and repeat. Each student has a different way they like to learn, so I adapt those ways and use it to the student's advantage. I love having the student be able to teach me the information we covered at the end of each session - if you can teach it, you have learned it! I am currently tutoring Middle school math, Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, ACT Science, and writing college essays/editing papers. Although I love teaching the logistics of the sciences, especially in ACT format, I find passion in helping students perfect their writing skills and develop strong, academic papers. Outside of school, I love playing sports such as volleyball, track, basketball, and baseball as well as going on hiking trips and adventures. I am a huge traveler, love reading new books, and love meeting new people. Besides helping students learn, I want the student to have fun, enjoy the tutoring session, and actually find a love for the subject they are studying. I used to hate reading and now it is one of my favorite things to do! Let's learn!

I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor's Degree in History. Since then, I've worked in the non-profit sector as a teacher for children and adults for the last three years. While I tutor a variety of subjects, I particularly enjoy teaching History, Writing, and Literature. History is especially fun to teach as there is often a perception that it's a boring or tedious subject. I really try to break out of that stereotype and make the subject more relevant and interesting for my students. Ultimately, I really like to take the time to get to know my students and work together to help them achieve their goals. In my free time I really love playing volleyball, going to the beach, watching movies, and traveling the world.
