After earning a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine where I focused on the neurobiology of learning and memory, I decided to change career paths. After completing 18 months of a post-baccalaureate pre-health program at New York University, I am elated to pursue a career in Veterinary Medicine.I completed my course requirements early and am now tutoring full-time, allowing me to devote my undivided attention to my students. I had the privilege of teaching multiple classes during my graduate career, and am excited to work one-on-one with students. I am eager to connect with them on a more personal level so that I may adjust my teaching style to meet the need of each individual.I earned a BA from the University of Rochester in Brain & Cognitive Sciences. Both my graduate and undergraduate studies have explored how the brain effectively learns information, and I look forward to opportunities where I can share what I have researched with others. Given my background, I am proficient in math, science, and psychology, and can help my students apply the principles of scientific writing to create clear and concise essays. Having recently taken the GREs, I look forward to sharing strategies for effective test-taking and SAT preparation. In my spare time I love running, and am a member of a women's running club. I particularly enjoy obstacle and mud-themed races, and the team atmosphere they encourage.

AP English Language and Composition Tutor • +59 Subjects
Having grown up in NJ and gone to high school at The Collegiate School in NYC, I'm well acquainted with many of the schools in the area. I attended Skidmore College as an undergraduate, where I studied the intersections of philosophy, government, religion, and history. Skidmore was also where I began to gain formal experience working with young students, specifically by working as a Classroom Assistant. After graduating from Skidmore with honors, I began to work on my MA at The New School for Social Research, where I am focusing on Ancient, Modern, and Contemporary political, legal, and moral philosophy. While at graduate school I have begun to tutor a number of students, many of whom I have now been working with for over a year. My greatest assets as a tutor lie in my mastery of the english language, skills in logic and conceptual organization, and versatile ability to explain to students complex ideas with which they find themselves frustrated and struggling. My goal is to restore students to a thoroughly self-sufficient status in their academic endeavors, an aim which pursue by focusing on the identification of students' advantages and disadvantages, and attempting to develop a unique plan for each student as to how we might capitalize on their strengths so as to neutralize their difficulties. I can be flexible about hours, and would be happy to receive email inquiries from any interested parents or students.

My philosophy is that every student deserves to be successful, no matter how or at what pace they learn. My job is to figure how you learn, and to help you develop skills to be able to learn on your own! I also like to make learning fun. Education shouldn't be boring, and we should bring life to it!

I have two Master's degrees in Education: (1) Teachers College Columbia University (Master of Education - Education Leadership); (2) Montclair State University (Master of Arts in Teaching). I have been teaching middle school mathematics and tutoring for my school's After School Youth Development Program for the past nine years. I also started my own after school program focusing on incorporating online resources for mathematics instruction. During my tenure, I increased my school's proficiency rate on the NJ ASK, New Jersey's end-of-year standardized assessment, by over 33 percent. In 2011, I was asked to lead the implementation of our new Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) program by Project Lead the Way, which is one of the leading providers of STEM education curricular programs in the country. In addition to teaching, I served as a member of the Connections to Algebraic Thinking Focus Group for my district. Our group was tasked with adjusting the middle school curriculum to better prepare students for the study of Algebra. I also completed the Emerging Leaders Program offered by the national nonprofit organization, New Leaders. The program helped strengthen my leadership and coaching skills and focused heavily on using data to drive instruction. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, rock climbing, longboarding, and skiing.

I thoroughly enjoy math and science, and it shows! I've tutored for over seven years and with a Bachelor's degree and Masters in environmental engineering, four years of industry experience and five years as a professional sailor, I have a lot of appreciation for how the world around us works. From the simple process of doubling a recipe, to finding the optimum angle between wind and current to win a sailing race, to deeper questions about the workings of the cosmos, I hope to help students understand and internalize just how important (and useful!) an education in math and science really is!

I am a senior biomedical engineering undergraduate and chemical biology masters student at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken New Jersey. I have a vested interest in the performing arts, love going to the gym, and hanging out with my fraternity brothers. While at Stevens I have spent a lot of time doing research in cell biology and chemistry, while working for the Academic Support Center, tutoring freshmen and sophomores in a variety of subjects. My favorite subjects include biology and calculus! When I teach, I am very passionate about building a students foundation in a topic. If this is done successfully, the student instantly moves away from trying to memorize facts and is equipped with the skills necessary to achieve a fuller understanding of the subject. One of my many mantras is and always will be:"Don't memorize..... think, learn, understand."
