Hello everyone:My name is Barry. I have been teaching mathematics on and off since 1970. I have a passion for teaching math. You might say that I love math. I have a BA degree in Math and an MS degree in Math Education, both from Lehman College. I worked for Honeywell International for 25 years. Half on my time at Honeywell, I was a technical trainer, teaching programming courses and operating system courses. I taught customers in the United States and from different countries. The other half of my time, I was a software test engineer. I retired from Honeywell in 2003.In 2003, I joined Everest College Phoenix. I teach math both on ground and online. In 2015, I joined Brown Mackie College and Grand Canyon University. In November, I will be married to my lovely wife, Sharon, for 47 years. I have two sons, Andrew and Mathew. Andrew is an oncologist. He is married and has two children, Benjamin and Lexie, who are 13 and7 years old, respectively. My younger son, Mathew, is an aspiring pharmacist with an MS degree in Psychology. Both Andrew and Mathew graduated from the University of Arizona for their undergraduate education. We have two cats, Pebbles and Sprinkles. I am looking forward to working with you this term.

As a tutor and citizen, I strongly support the importance of education because of its ability to empower and improve people's lives. I am a Notre Dame alumna and an Arizona State alumna, where I received my Masters in Social Work. I am from Milwaukee, WI, and moved out to Phoenix 9 years ago.I really love helping people, which is what led me to pursue social work. I enjoy tutoring because it gives me the chance to spend quality time with a person, learning his or her learning style, so that I can adapt my teaching style to best help the individual. I have always really enjoyed and excelled at math, but find that I can tutor a broad range of subjects, from English to history to accounting. Test prep is a strong area for me, as I like to focus on the patterns and trends that come up in standardized tests. If you are looking for a tutor that will go at your desired pace and will work at your level, I am a good fit for you. I have tutored students from the elementary school age up to the graduate school level.In my free time, I love watching sports, especially football. I am a recent graduate of Eastern Washington University where I received my Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering after taking various classes at the University of Washington. I have tutored mostly advanced subjects, including Computer Programming in various languages, such as MatLab and Java, 3D Modeling Computer-Aided Design with Solidworks, and Applied Electromagnetics. I am qualified to tutor Mathematics up through Calculus, and also starter Electrical Engineering classes, such as Circuit Theory and Digital Logic. I enjoy tutoring Algebra, Trigonometry, and Programming because they provide an understanding of patterns and logic, which I believe are useful problem-solving techniques that can be utilized throughout life. My tutoring style includes teaching how to efficiently and effectively set up and solve problems for tests and explaining real world applications for advanced math and how it relates to Electrical Engineering. In my spare time, I enjoy biking, hiking, weight lifting, healthy cooking, playing video games, and I also collect high-powered laser systems for experiments and entertainment.

I am currently a senior at the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University training to become a Spanish teacher. I have tutored some of my college classmates in various subjects over the years and have roughly a year and a half of experience working in a high school teaching Spanish to students.My main area of expertise within my content area is Spanish literature of Latin America, but I also have extensive education in Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and culture. In addition to my education in Spanish, I have also had training in English composition and teaching English as a second language.During my year and a half of teaching in high school classes, I have had the opportunity to teach several English language learners. I believe that I am able to help English language learners particularly well because I am open minded and see their native cultures and languages as assets rather than burdens.I use similar practices for both Spanish and English language learners. These practices include using pictures, PowerPoint presentations, music, and videos. I mix these with some more traditional practices (guided notes, advanced organizers, handouts), but I have found using technology to be one of the best ways to learn a language.I love to communicate with people and discover new ways of looking at the world from them. I hope that I can learn just as much from my tutees as they can learn from me.

I believe that learning should be an enjoyable and fulfilling experience and that the value of teachers is based on their love of the subject matter and their care for transmitting it to the student.

I received my bachelor's in music education from Grand Canyon University, and my master's in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University. I have a passion for reading and love to help my students find their own passion as well. I have taught all grade levels from 4th grade through 10th grade, and have extensive experience with middle school.I believe that all students can learn and be successful, and that all students have unique strengths. I work hard in my classroom to ensure that students can be successful, often finding new ways for them to express their learning.Outside of teaching, I enjoy reading, spending time with my family, and exercising.

Learning should be an exciting joyful experience. If we start with what we know and seek new knowledge that connects from there, learning will be easy. The average person needs 10 times to master any new knowledge. It is totally normal to forget and need to review previous knowledge. Each time we relearn material it is easier and is more likely to be permanent. Vygotsy's theory of the "zone of proximal development" or ZPD states that a person will learn best within the range of their current development. If it's boring, it is to low. If it is confusing, it is to high. Adjusting materials (scaffolding) or providing support are two ways to provide optimal learning. See you online.
