Learning is a two-way street, where we can gain only so much by ourselves. It is human nature to interact with one another, and gain from that experience something much more than what can be learned individually. It is for that reason that students need to interact with their learning, such as with ...

I am a graduate of Willamette University, where I earned my BA in Psychology with a minor in Mathematics. Currently, I am preparing for the Actuarial Science certification exams by taking classes at Arizona State University. I tutored students from a variety of academic backgrounds at my previous university, primarily in quantitative methods like Applied Statistics. Although Statistics is my favorite subject to tutor, I also very much enjoy other math topics like Calculus and Algebra, as well as writing and Psychology. I take a foundational approach to tutoring by focusing on the individual building blocks of a topic; I identify which of those building blocks a student is comfortable with and which we should work on together. Once those building blocks are established, we can more easily transition into the next levels of the topic. Most importantly, I work with a student to create a plan tailored to their individual learning style and needs. When I am not studying or tutoring, I like to spend my time reading, hiking, exploring the sights in Arizona, traveling, and visiting my family back home in the Pacific Northwest!

I am a recent graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas with a B.S. in Neuroscience cum laude. I am living in Austin until I begin medical school in July. Tutoring has always been a hobby of mine, and I continued my passion for teaching during college by being the Peer Tutor for a Statistics course and a Biology course at Trinity. Additionally, I tutored middle and high school students in the San Antonio community while working for a company similar to Varsity Tutoring. My favorite part of being a tutor is seeing the light-bulb moment happen for my students when they finally grasp a concept they???ve been struggling with. Usually with my students and as a student myself, I find that explaining concepts in a different way with language that is more understandable or connecting it to real-world experiences goes a long way. As a competitive swimmer for the past 15 years and the captain of my college team, I understand the desire students have for excelling in both the classroom and in their extracurricular activities and the struggle that can occur between balancing them. Besides tutoring, I enjoy traveling, spending time with my family and my dog, and cooking!

I am a current student at Northern Arizona University and I am studying Elementary Education with an emphasis in K-6 Math, Middle School Math, History/Social Studies, and Humanities.Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to be a teacher and I have used that passion and drive to learn the most I can about being a successful, kind, and supportive teacher/tutor. I have cherished my extensive time as a teacher's aid in the classroom, and along the way have developed my own teaching style. I believe that it's a teacher's job to help a student to enjoy what they are learning, so inquiry is a big part of my teaching style. I love to get my students engaged and intrigued by the subject they are working on. That way, the topics they are working through can be approached at a fun and exciting angle.Although I have a fondness for all subjects of learning, I have a true passion for mathematics. My previous major as a Secondary Education Mathematics student lead me to realize how much I love the thrill of solving a math problem. That is something I am so excited to share with my students! I am also passionate about organization and helping a student figure out the best way for them to learn/stay organized and efficient!Along with my love for math, I love to read, paint, and hike.

In his inaugural speech John F Kennedy said "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Twelve years ago, I responded to President Kennedy's charge by beginning my career in New York as a volunteer EMT, firefighter, and reserve police officer. I later went on to work as an EMT and police officer in New York City and in Phoenix, Arizona. During my career I have had the opportunity to attain some of the more powerful experiences of in various public safety and disaster management roles. Having had the fortune of providing first aid both physically and mentally to victims has allowed me to bring life-saving and life changing values to many that I interacted with. It is my personal belief that no work is more rewarding than that of life in service to others. In addition, to my experiences in EMS, I have built my skill set from a variety of professional roles and industries, to include my experience as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for two professors at the law school I attended. I accepted the opportunity to work as a TA to help new students be successful in their studies and to let new students know they are not alone in the struggle known as law school.Taking on the roll of tutor with Varsity Tutors would allow me the great opportunity to not only improve the standard of education but to assist in providing world class education to all students.Upon completing a Masters Degree in Leadership with a concentration in Disaster Preparedness, the core of the lesson learned was that in order to be a good leader one must be willing to serve others joyfully, with heart and egoless style of leadership. Throughout my career, I have tried to follow the Airforce leadership perspective of, "Mission First, People Always!" Take care of your people and they will take care of the mission. I strive I try to involve my colleagues in the ethical and caring decision making process. The simplest and most universal strategy for teaching and leadership is to see oneself serving others. The utilization of servant leadership continues to motivate me to help others become not just great EMT's but also future leaders in healthcare.

I have been teaching for years and have for a long time. It is exciting to be teaching at home now. I never thought I'd enjoy it this much, but working with my dog at my feet. This year, I'm going to be acting in THE LARAMIE PROJECT and JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. I'll be directing MOANA and THE JUNGLE BOOK over the summer.Teaching is as much about learning as teaching, and I hope that you enjoy learning too.
