I'm a doctoral student in the African American Studies Department at Northwestern University. My disciplinary focus includes English/Literature, Political Theory, and Media Studies. I love to study film, history, literature, and other adaptive strategies for sharing our stories. But I especially love helping my students and peers to explore their interests, generate ideas for research, and pursue them with the necessary tools and guidance that I hope to provide.I received my BA (with honors) from Dartmouth College in 2016. Though I arrived to Dartmouth as an environmental engineer (I still love math!), my interests in community development and historical research methods prompted my present trajectory. I love teaching and mentoring, and believe with the right attention, interest, and adaptable teaching strategies, students can learn and grow beyond the conventional classroom setting.

I enjoy coaching students to attain academic success while having fun learning about themselves and the world they live in. Most students just need a listening ear that will help them understand what they can't wrap their minds around sometimes. By offering different approaches to a problem, it may be possible to help that student have an 'aha' moment of his own.

I am a highly motivated, PhD physics student with a very strong background in mathematics and physics. I have plenty of experience as a tutor, helping students at both the high school and university level. As a tutor, I try to not only instruct students how to do the problem that they are struggling with but to also make sure that they understand why such a procedure works. As a student, I did not always find new concepts easy to understand and I therefore empathise with struggling students, coaching them with a patient, probing approach until we are both satisfied that we have reached our goal.My mathematics and physics background has provided me plenty of experience with problem solving, so that I can often understand concepts from multiple viewpoints. By passing this knowledge on to any prospective tutees, they will most certainly sharpen their problem solving abilities while simultaneously obtain the tools necessary to improve their test scores.

Why, hello. As you've seen above, my name is Karl and I'm originally from the great Northwest. I moved out to New York originally to take advantage of an exciting opportunity to work towards the development of a safe and effective vaccine for the HIV virus. I've stayed because of the vibe of excitement and competition in the city. It truly does push you to be your best. In my free time, I enjoy exploring the ever-changing NYC landscape, stumbling about the internet learning whatever it has to teach me, studying politics both as an art and a science, as well as my guilty pleasure of watching the NFL and the occasional Newcastle game.As an HIV vaccine researcher for several years, I was taught many obscure facts and techniques. As a specialist in assay development (making up new experiments), I created even more. All of these techniques and ideas had to be passed on to the next generation of researchers, so I spent much of my time developing techniques to teach topics on which my pupil knows little to nothing to begin. Further, this information had to be passed on with no margin of error, as a single deviation between tests can render any and all data meaningless. In part through these laboratory experiences, I have learned that true understanding comes from the teaching of central concepts rather than brute-force memorization. In short, you don't learn THAT 62=3, you learn WHY 62=3, allowing you to find 82, 122, 93, and all the others (this technique can be extrapolated to many of the graduate test prep tutoring work I do).Similarly, I don't teach what the answer to a particular LSAT question might be, but rather why it is so. I don't simply warn you that question X of practice GRE Y is a trick question; I show you how it is a trick question, and teach you how to spot similar tricks in the future. Just like counting to 100 (or even 1,000,000,000) is no longer scary once you learn how the numbers are combined, so too the placement exams will lose their bite once you learn how they are constructed and how the test-makers think. The joy of using a tutor, like myself, is that I can not only show you the tricks that DID work for me, but I can also help you find the tricks that WILL work for you. The test prep books, and the cookie-cutter classrooms, must remain generic so that they can work, at least on some level, for all of the students who might read the book or take the class. With 1-on-1 tutoring, we will be able to create personalized strategies for preparing for, and eventually taking, the exam in which you are interested that are able to maximize your personal and unique set of knowledge and abilities. I look forward to helping you to find your personal path to success!- Karl

I have twenty years teaching experience in math & physics. I worked my way through college and know what it means to be a working student. I got into graduate school after being out of school for five years by taking a graduate class at my own expense and scoring in the top half of that class. I believe in empowering student success. I help students understand problems by developing their critical thinking skills. I have worked with a wide variety of student backgrounds and motivations and have an adaptive teaching style that can meet most students' needs.

I am a currently attending Graduate School and working towards my Masters of Science in Education for Urban Adolescents with Special Needs (Grades 7-12). I enjoy tutoring because I find contributing to another person's joy and sense of accomplishment immensely gratifying.I am a person who enjoys different and challenging experiences, and I believe my track record as a tutor is an example of that. I have had the opportunity of engaging in the most unique mixture of peculiar, fun, and stimulating positions. My experience ranges from ESL classes with Somali refugee students in high school to Special Needs students in elementary school. I have also done some freelance tutoring intermittently for friends and family. All of these experiences have been contributed to my teaching style. My philosophy for tackling challenging academic subjects is also an outgrowth of my own personal study habits.I believe that organization is key. I have found that a certain combination of systematic organization and simplification of every detail helps to illuminate the solution. Having a structured and repeatable approach can then be engrained in the thought process through repetition, and improvement will surely follow.Furthermore, I believe positive reinforcement and encouragement are also invaluable tutoring tools. Inspiring confidence in students so that they don't become discouraged by difficulties they encounter keeps them engaged and more inclined to self-improvement.
