Apart from my main qualifications, I believe being a "good" teacher is to have a certain personality and character. Known to be a patient, understanding, and empathetic person, I believe I can work with students of all levels, personalities, and ages. I am also a big believer of fun! I believe any type of learning should be fun and exhilarating. As for my qualifications, I have been an English language teacher for more than 8 years teaching all age groups, including undergraduate students, and have more than 20 years of tutoring under my belt. I have worked with all grade levels (love/great with kids!) and am an advocator of using multi-modal instructional methods. I am not a big fan of boring/ineffective memorization and drills but like to use active learning to deliver instruction. I am also a doctoral candidate in literacy and language education at Boston University and have a B.A. and M.A. in English. I primarily focus on tutoring ESL, writing, and SAT/GRE test preps.I'm also offering tutoring in the Korean language (conversational Korean/reading/writing). I am a Korean-American, born bilingual in English and Korean, who can speak/read/write fluently in Korean.

I have been a Special Education teacher for 15 years and I've taught every subject at the High School level. I decided that I wanted to become a teacher after I spent a year in AmeriCorp. I taught GED and job training courses at a women's center in Baltimore City. I saw first hand how powerful and education can be. I have my B.A. in History and a M.A. in Special Education. I have taken extra College courses in Math to become highly qualified to teach Math. I have taken two Master's level Physics courses to work towards my Physics Teacher certification. Last summer I took the Virginia Council on Economics Education course to familiarize myself with the content on the WISE exam. I enjoy teaching Math, Science and History. I try to incorporate real world examples into my course content so students can relate to the information they are learning.

I am a graduate of Indiana University Bloomington, where I received my PhD in Plant Community Ecology. I have a passionate interest in community ecology and as a scientist, I feel a responsibility for teaching and mentoring in both academic and non-academic situations, where my audience consists of individuals from myriad backgrounds and experiences. My interest in teaching began as an undergraduate, when I tutored middle school students in science and mathematics. I have also worked as a tutor at the community college level and for adults seeking their GEDs. More recently, as an associate instructor and an adjunct professor at Randolph-Macon College, I have taught undergraduate students in topics including general biology, ecology, evolution, and ecosystem sustainability. My teaching philosophy and the practices that I use to carry it out, have evolved over my years as a professional in higher education. I believe transparency and organization are essential to developing student trust and confidence. As an instructor, I clearly state course learning objectives, structure, and schedule in syllabi and provide reminders and updates at the beginning of every class.I believe that learning includes more than what happens in the classroom. I have found that be a successful teacher, I myself must be a student of learning. I need to understand how the modern student connects with the material and how they learn and retain the content. Students, especially those in the sciences, need to physically interact with the material through immersive and hands-on projects and to think critically about what the data means and how to apply it.As an instructor, my role is also one of facillitation, whereby student thought, preparation, and participation is more actively fostered. I am invested in community outreach that bridges gaps between academic knowledge and applied community action. From planning and installing native plant gardens to promoting outreach experiences from people from all walks of life, I love to roll up my sleeves, get my hands dirty, and talk about science!

Hello! I am excited to have the opportunity to share a little bit more about myself. I grew up in a very small town with a very loving family. When I am not teaching I love to travel, try new restaurants and foods, or watch sports. Also, family is a very important part of my life and who I am today. One thing that has truly made me the person I am today is teaching and education.I first fell in love with teaching at the age of sixteen when I enrolled in a program called Teachers for Tomorrow. Like many sixteen-year-olds, I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life after high school. I enrolled in the program because when I was in primary school I struggled greatly academically. I remembered a group of teenagers coming in and helping the teacher with some of the students that needed extra support with their work. I registered for the class and have never left the classroom since. I entered my first classroom for the program and was able to work with a second-grade class. Each day I looked forward to being able to leave the high school and work with the students. After graduation, I attended Liberty University where I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary and Special Education with additional endorsements in middle school education and history. Afterwards, I went back to my hometown and began teaching fifth-grade special education. During this time I started working on my Master's in Special Education from Liberty University. I continued teaching in my hometown in fourth and fifth-grade special education and general education. While continuing to teach in my hometown I saw a true need for additional support in reading and language arts. In the spring of my seventh year of teaching, I decided to enroll at Grand Canyon University in the Master's program for curriculum and instruction for reading. After completing the program I was able to assist more students in my hometown. I also earned a certification in Autism Spectrum Disorder. My teaching philosophy and tutoring style is based on the idea that the teacher has to meet the student where they are academically, emotionally, and mentally. A teacher should be able to meet a child's needs in all these areas in order for the instruction to be successful and have goals met. During tutoring sessions, there will be activities that are fun, educational, rigorous, and appropriate for the student. My passion for teaching and creating quality instruction comes from my struggles as a young student. When I was in primary school I struggled greatly in school and required extra assistance. It truly affected me in many ways even though I was very young. I decided that I never want any student to ever feel the way I did as that student that struggled to keep up with the work.Over the past eleven years, I have been working as a full-time teacher. I have instructed many different grade levels. I spent a majority of my time working with fourth and fifth graders in general education and special education. Currently, I teach Pre-K and am a mentor teacher for Kindergarten. I also have experience with first grade and second grade where I was an instructional leader for a summer program.Currently, I am available to teach any subject from kindergarten to fifth grade. I am also available for middle school English, executive functioning, reading comprehension, students with learning difficulties, and students with special needs. My favorite subjects to teach are elementary reading and math because it allows me to be creative and present the material in a fun and interesting way. I look forward to working with you in the future.

I am a 2015 graduate of the University of Virginia, where I received my Bachelor's of Science degree in biochemistry and a minor in biology. I graduated a member of Phi Beta Kappa. While in college, I was on a pre-medicine track, and I am currently applying to various MD programs around the country. As of now I am living in Richmond, VA, where I also work as a medical scribe. In the past I held a series of paid and unpaid teaching positions for science classes, where I realized I had a talent and passion for helping students succeed in their classes. These positions include one-on-one tutoring sessions, being a teaching assistant for lecture classes, and aiding other teaching assistants in lab classes. Through these experiences I became proficient in many different teaching styles, allowing me to cater to a variety of different types of students. My approach to tutoring is to provide high quality education using an interactive teaching plan. My goal is to create an active learning experience where I first guide students through difficult concepts and then reinforce these concepts through problem solving. I usually start with a problem that requires knowledge of the subject, and lead the student through it. Over time, as the student becomes more familiar with the concept enough to solve problems him-/herself, I can remove myself from the equation. My hope is that through me my students can develop good studying habits and a passion for learning and the sciences.
