I hold my Elementary Teaching Degree from Bemidji State University, my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction K-12 from the University of St. Thomas, and a current Minnesota Teaching License. I retired almost 3 years ago after teaching for 34 wonderful years in the public school system, teaching 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade. There were so many things that I loved about teaching that my friends wondered why I was retiring. But, I have been blessed with three grandchildren on opposite ends of the country, and if I want to have fun with them, I need to be available. This led me to spend the next four years teaching English as a Second Language online to students aged 3-16, for which I hold TSOL and TFEL certificates. I found out that genuine, meaningful relationships can be formed virtually. And this love of teaching flexibly, online, brought me to Varsity Tutors. My first love of teaching is making students feel like they can learn anything, cheering them on, and making them love learning. Students want to know that you truly care about and believe in them, and I do! While I am available to teach many subjects, and I truly love them all, reading, writing, math, and English as a Second Language are my favorites. I am passionate about teaching students to not only read, but to LOVE reading! I excel at diagnosing current reading skills, and determining what they still need to learn in order to move them to the next level. I take into consideration their fluency, accuracy, comprehension, and reading strategies that they employ, and what ones they need to practice. If you can read, you can learn anything! I love teaching math, and making reluctant math students realize their inner math genius! I understand that not all learners learn the same way. I am very willing to teach them more than one way to solve a problem and help them become an expert at the way that works for them. I love teaching writing! I was fortunate to get to train under author Beth Olshansky in the art of pictures and image making. This is such a motivating way to teach students how to write, honing all of the skills necessary, including all of the traits of good writing, while the student creates a piece to be proud of. This makes the student want to write more! It is a writing strategy that works for young and older learners alike! I enjoy filling my days with traveling, baking, reading, and playing with my grandkids. In the summer I paddleboard almost daily, and in the winter I love to snowshoe. I hope to see you soon!

I love to help students see math as a serious of puzzles or patterns that lead them to that 'AHA!' moment when they truly understand what is going on! I have been a math teacher for the past five years, teaching courses such as Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability, Algebra 2, Algebra 3, Introduction to College Algebra, and College Algebra. I was also a Teacher's Assistant for Calculus in College. I graduated summa cum laude from Saint John's University with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Secondary Education. While teaching, I also attended Southwest Minnesota State University, obtaining a Masters of Science in Education, Learning, and Leadership along with an additional 18-credit emphasis in Mathematics. My favorite subject to tutor is Statistics because it is so applicable to anyone's favorite interests. My tutoring philosophy is to connect new material to a student's prior learning. The beauty of math is that it builds on itself, so when you find what a student already knows, teaching them something new is just connecting that new topic to material they already feel confident about! I became a math teacher to help students become the best version of themselves and to find success in life! I am a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. I have had a lot of experience tutoring standardized prep through my own old tutoring non-profit. I believe in learning by doing, so we are going to be doing a lot of practice problems to learn all the best test taking methods!

As a kid I loved solving puzzles. Countless newspaper crosswords, video games, detective novels and riddles later I noticed that I could teach things to myself and others in the same way I approached these puzzles. Assess, plan, solve and check. Communicating what I know to others is something I have been doing my entire life. From tutoring my peers in math and science to volunteer tutoring immigrant students struggling with English I have been constantly reminded of my love for learning and teaching what I have learned to others. I firmly believe that the methods within the art teaching are flexible. One approach does not work for everyone, so I look for solutions from all angles. I graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and a minor in English. I went on to receive my Masters in medical physiology at Loyola University Chicago. I tutor a wide range of subjects including SAT test preparation, Biology, Math, Chemistry, English and Literature. Although I enjoy tutoring all subjects, I especially enjoy tutoring the sciences (AP and IB) and literature. I think learning is a lifestyle so I constantly work to acquire more knowledge and come up with additional ways to internalize that knowledge. This lifestyle extends outside of my studies.

I have tutored all ages for family friends and love the challenge of helping students connect with difficult subjects.

I recently graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelors degree in math, and I spent the majority of my four years there working in the math tutoring center. I loved being able to work one-on-one with students and see their growth as they started to understand the material. I strongly believe that understanding concepts is just as important as being able to work out technical problems, and that all students (regardless of perceived mathematical intelligence) have the ability to do so. I also understand how mathematics functions to gatekeep some students from certain majors and jobs later in life, and it is my hope that I can help provide access to these majors and jobs for the students whom I tutor.

I am currently a student at the University of Colorado Boulder studying Astrophysics. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I am completing my degree from my home in Minnesota! When I graduate, I am hoping to go on to obtain a master's in education and become a licensed teacher. I want to see a world of educational equity and I think tutoring is a great way to get there. I believe it is important to get to know every student, their learning style, and what they need from a tutor before beginning the actual tutoring so the sessions can be more personalized. I have always a passion for curiosity. The buzzword "lifelong learner" has been around the education world for quite some time. But I want to have a lifelong curiosity. I always want to know things work and how to better understand things. I bring that same passion for curiosity to everything that I do, especially teaching and tutoring. Nothing brings me greater joy than being able to bring someone closer to their capability. My biggest teaching motto has been: "I don't teach based on what I know my students can already. I teach based on where I know they are capable of going and what they are capable of doing." I believe that people should always strive to know more. Curiosity makes the world a better and, frankly, a more fun place. If I can instill that lifelong curiosity into even one of my students, I would have reached success.I also firmly believe that conversation is a huge part of a successful teaching/learning process. No one knows how the students learn better than the students themselves. I constantly check in with how students are doing, often before I tell them how I think they are doing. This constantly dialogue allows us to form a better connection and does nothing but allow me to teach and the student learn better. I want to know their goals, interests, hobbies, learning styles, and anything and everything in between. This process is not a dictatorship but a partnership.I look forward to getting know my students and helping them on their educational journey!!!!

I am a recent Physics graduate/nerd looking to tutor students in mathematics, physics, and computer programming. Too often I hear people say that they are 'bad' at math, science, or programming. I believe that anyone can be proficient in these subjects given the proper teacher.
