When I was a student at Indiana University, I really enjoyed helping my friends who weren't English majors or who were ESL students write essays for their courses. Since then I've continued tutoring both Essay Writing and Literature, and now I'm foraying into test prep as well.I'm currently working as an Editorial Assistant for the Indiana Legislative Services Agency, so I edit state bills for grammar and punctuation, to make sure the law looks neat and tidy. I really can't get enough of the English language! In my free time I love rock climbing, kayaking/canoeing/swimming, yoga and running. (Anything where I can't disappoint a team, because, believe me, I would!) I also enjoy writing, usually creative short stories.

Anatomy & Physiology Tutor • +11 Subjects
Hi! I'm Shelley and I LOVE to help students learn! I am a nurse and an educator! I can take tough topics and make them easy to understand-- I helped a family member bounce back from a TWO grade-level deficit in math and reading just by teaching her some great study skills and breaking down difficult subjects using examples she could understand. Learning is for life, and educating is my passion! I'm enthusiastic, imparting fun and humor into things that one may find otherwise mundane.I'm a masters degreed Registered Nurse with experience in the ICU, telemetry, cariolopulmonary, nephrology, urology, oncology, and primary care. I graduated from DePaul University with Presidential Distinction, and I was a full time professor at the College of Nursing at Purdue; now adjunct. In addition to hands on patient care and educating, I have managed large scale outpatient medical practices in a variety of specialty areas for over 20 years.I love what I do, and I'm here to help, so let's get started!

My father loved camping and the out of doors and so some of my earliest memories are of camping in the mountains of Northern New Mexico. As a family, we took extended trips through the western United States, Canada and Alaska, towing a travel trailer and camping in mostly primitive camps. As a young teen, I started backpacking in the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado and developed a great love for the mountain and canyon country of the west. It was this great love of nature that attracted me to science--first as a Forestry major at Northern Arizona University but which eventually evolved to the study of chemistry, as that seemed to me the basic science that was as the heart of understanding nature. While my love of learning was probably instilled in me very early in my life (thanks to my parents, I was an avid reader), it really came out while in college. In finishing my chemistry degree, I realized I was just beginning to learn what I wanted to learn and went on to graduate school to get a PhD studying Physical Chemistry at Purdue University.I am now retired from full time teaching, but not from my love of learning (nor my love of the mountains) which has continually evolved. My experiences of teaching science from demonstrations in elementary school to graduate level courses have given me a great interest in the teaching of science to the general public and sharing with others, that same awe, wonder and appreciation I have."To become educated is to become more human."

Growing up in one-stoplight town, I spent a lot of time reading. This blossomed into a fascination with history which has led me to travel around the US and Europe. My love of helping people learn began early as well, with teaching swim lessons in the local pool. I attended college at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. Surprising, I majored in history and not vampire studies. I worked at a software company, where one of my duties was to train new employees, before moving to England to pursue a Masters Degree in Modern History Durham University. When not in the classroom, I love hiking, swimming, reading, and playing video games. From my pre-school to my Master's degree, I've found tutors and teachers who helped shape a love of learning in me. Drawing on my own experience, I believe making connections between subjects and personal interests is key to instilling excitement in any topic. Helping students form these connections develops a desire to learn which often lasts beyond succeeding in a single class.I am happy to assist with a wide variety of subjects from ACT prep to general homework assistance for any age student. My experiences with children outside the classroom as a swim coach and assistant scoutmaster has reinforced my belief that teaching requires positivity, patience, and enthusiasm to achieve success.Successful learning in a tutoring session needs a good tutor-student relationship, and forming this bond is also a vital part of the teaching process. This allows me to personally challenge and motivate students so they take ownership in their studies. Having struggled with a learning disability of my own, I know there is no single way to learn, and believe adapting teaching methods to fit the individual student is crucial.
