I've been teaching high school for the past 7 years and I've taught everything from Pre-Algebra to AP Calculus. There are many skills that make an outstanding teacher. First, I believe you have to have a love for people. When you have a love for people, it helps you to be more compassionate and concerned with their individual needs. Since students come from various backgrounds and environments, an outstanding teacher must be able to adapt to each students individual personalities and needs. I am a firm believer that students may not always remember what you teach them, but they will always remember how you made them feel. Secondly, an outstanding teacher is one who can take things that are difficult and make them simple to understand. That is extremely important when discussing mathematics because many students struggle with math and if we as educators make it simple to understand, they will be more likely to retain the information. Another attribute I believe is necessary to be an outstanding teacher, is to never stop learning yourself. We as educators have to continue to develop professionally and work on our "craft". Since our world is constantly evolving with technology and other things, we have to keep up with our development if we are to continue to shape the minds of the young people whom we teach. It is imperative that we continue to grow and set a good example in our hunger to get better if we want to impart that to our students.
