Summer Tutoring review by Youcef in Niles, IL
The student is amazing. She has a great personality, a wonderful attitude, learns fast and is super intelligent. She tends to think far ahead and does lots of mental processing before putting the answer down on paper. She's learning to take the time to write down her thoughts, and I believe her grades will dramatically improve. I went over 1st order, single variable equations with multiple monomials of the same variable and helped her process the equation and work the terms out to end up having only the variable of interest (i.e. x=...) on one side of the equation, representing the solution to the equation. She uses the two hands trick to quickly figure out multiplication by 9. I shared with her another trick for figuring out multiplication by 11.

Today we reviewed for his vocabulary quiz, made flashcards, and I quizzed him. I recommended that he study every day until the quiz on Friday. We will review his exam next week when he gets it back and I will grade his homework for a half hour this week.

Summer Tutoring review by James in Niles, IL
During our session, the student and I covered math, science, and history. In math, the student is still working on algebraic expressions and solving for them. Again, the student is quite sharp with the procedural aspects of algebraic expressions. While doing his work, he only made one error with respect to procedure. His main problem comes in the form of making sure that he brings negative signs down through an equation, so we are working on making sure that negatives stay negative and positives stay positive. Math could be an anchor subject for him. In history, the student is starting a project on the evaluation of fact and opinion in historical documents. He is to examine aspects regarding the two earliest permanent European settlements in North America and evaluate how they perceived and whether they helped or hindered the colony. To do this, the student read short excerpts from Bradford's "Of Plymouth Plantation". Science was reviewed very briefly.

Summer Tutoring review by Gretchen in Niles, IL
We went over his "Of Mice and Men" review sheets. We spent the remainder of the time doing a much deeper literature analysis of the book. We talked about the three main themes - predatory nature of human existence, male friendship, and impossibility of the American dream; three motifs - loneliness, the corrupting power of women, strength and weakness; and three main symbols - Lennie and George's farm, Lennie's puppy, and Candy's dog. We also talked about the character Crooks, how characters communicate indirectly, and the role of nature in the book.

Summer Tutoring review by Julie in Niles, IL
For this day's session, we covered her daily homework and prepared for the next day's math quiz. She confirmed that there was no homework for language arts, and she had already completed her reading homework. She verified that her special online timeline project had been completed, and that she had made minor changes during school hours by changing the visual pictures she had included on her timeline. She did not have any official science homework and stated that they are continuing to be taught about biological concepts such as the parts of a cell and different processes such as osmosis. We spent the majority of the session reviewing for her math quiz on exponents, equations, order of operations and properties for addition/multiplication. She showed that she had strong comprehension regarding these mathematical concepts and was fairly confident that she would do satisfactorily.

Summer Tutoring review by Amanda in Niles, IL
The student got a 70 on his Hamlet written assignment, so he is going to ask his teacher for very specific advice on how to get better than a C on his next assignment. He sent me a copy of the assignment, so I am going to read over it and edit it for our session tomorrow. He has his big AP English test in 2 weeks and also needs to take a math exam in May, so our next step is to create a clear action plan for prepping for those things. We talked a lot about testing strategies today.
