Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Jeana in Melrose Park, IL
The student brought his history textbook and homework packet to work on. We talked briefly about the technique of skim reading and found that it would be more applicable for us to "practice" the skim reading we were talking about with quiz/general assessment materials. The student completed most of his history packet during our session.

We covered the student's vocabulary from German class and spoke in German about ingredients and how to make certain meals. We continued to speak in German, and this helped with his comprehension and speaking skills.

Today we worked on science projects and Shakespeare. He had a large data charting assignment, and we learned how to do this efficiently in Excel. We also talked about strategies for study sessions that are long (taking breaks, walking around, changing content areas). One of his challenges is sitting for long periods of time and working on things - which leads to burnout. We discussed setting time limits for subjects and then switching (45 minutes on science, 5 minute break, 45 minutes English, etc.). This will help him stay focused and improves retention.

Summer Tutoring review by Benjamin in Melrose Park, IL
First, we went over a short government essay based on an interpretation of a text. Then, we reviewed his chemistry essay. I think things went well, and he seems to be understanding all the major concepts and tying them together with some support. He still has a couple small geometry assignments to finish by Monday.

The student continued his review of the Ideal gas law worksheet. He had completed problems 1-5 earlier in the day and I corrected his work as he worked on problems 6-9. He did a very good job with his assignment and all of his work was shown on the page, which allowed me to fully understand his work. He explained that he is still struggling with the material but I think he is just being hard on himself. We had a very productive session.

Summer Tutoring review by Kimyen in Melrose Park, IL
In today's session, we went over three different classes and the student's assignments in them. We went over biology, history/literature, and math. She had homework in biology (mitosis) and history/literature (current events), which she had to read information about and answer questions/summarize for her homework assignments. For her math class, she received her exam back. She did well on the exponents part, which we have been spending time covering. As we went over each and every question that she missed, I explained the concepts to her and covered up her previous work on the exam so that she can start fresh with each problem. This also allowed me to observe her thinking and see where she made mistakes. As always, she is a great student and very easy to teach. She may not always ask questions, so I try to explain each step to her before moving on.
