Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Miami, FL Physiology tutoring
In this session we finished the lab report we had started last time. Writing the introduction for the lab report took the longest time which was good because I think the student really got it. By the end, the student had a good handle on writing these reports which was encouraging.

The student told me today that she earned a B on her most recent test, which is an encouraging improvement from earlier grades. We discussed genetic engineering, focusing on key terms and concepts. She is just beginning to learn this material, but seems to be learning it well.

In today's session, the student and I went over more thermochemistry problems. We worked on Hess' law problems and calorimetry problems. He was open to the work and was very helpful in getting the materials prepared. He was very good at the conversions and identifying how to set up the equations.

Today we spent the session reviewing the material from the past few weeks on uniform motion, unit conversion, and significant figures. By far the most challenging concepts were the relationship between position vs time graphs, velocity vs time graphs and motion maps (and the student's review worksheet focused mainly on this). We discussed the principal steps in converting a position vs time graph to a velocity vs time graph (and vice versa) by looking at slope and how this connects to the two types of graphs. In terms of calculus, velocity vs time (written v(t)), is the derivative of position vs time (x(t)); in other words, v(t) is plotted as the slope of x(t) at all corresponding points). This relationship then makes it possible to draw both quantitatively as well as qualitatively v(t) or x(t) when given one but not the other. She had more trouble moving from a v(t) graph to x(t) so we spent more time working through these kinds of examples and discussing standardized methods for approaching them, so they will not appear so daunting on the day of a test. She is doing very well with unit conversion and significant figures and the only thing I recommended to her was to make sure she had the standardized division method for unit conversion and all of the addition/ subtraction, multiplication/ division rules of significant figures memorized before her next test. She is handling all of the material very well at the moment and with just a little bit more practice she will completely ready to face any assignment or exam testing these concepts.

We reviewed net ionic equations before her exam tomorrow. To accomplish this we went over post-lab and practice exam questions. She showed a strong command of the material from the beginning of the session, and I think she will do great tomorrow!
