The College Bridge Program is a cooperative venture between Kenwood Academy, University of Chicago and Chicago City Colleges. Students participate voluntarily during and after school or in the summer, earning a year of transferable college credit and a year of high school elective credit upon completion of a full year of college coursework. This is an off campus arts program that provides high school juniors/seniors who show exceptional talent and interest in the arts. Students may earn honors or Advanced Placement credit toward completion of a year of study and course objectives. CPFTA is a 2-year after school program that allows students to train at the Chicago Police and Fire Academies for a career in law, public safety, fire science, and more while earning school credit. For more information visit cpfta.com.

Students participating in Chicago Builds receive technical training in Carpentry, Electricity, Heating and Cooling (HVAC), Welding, and General Construction. Students will receive high school credits for successful completion of the course curriculum. They also have opportunities to earn industry-recognized certifications (OSHA 10 Construction), prepare for union entrance exams, and participate in paid work experiences during the 11th grade summer transition to Year 2 of the program.

Urban Alliance is a one-year employment program for high school seniors. The goal is to provide youth access to professional growth and experiences. The program prepares students for a life of work and self-sufficiency through paid internships, formal training, and mentorship. During the school year, each Urban Alliance Intern works part-time with a job partner in the public or private sector. Each Friday, they attend life skills and job readiness workshops. In this program, students engage in a paid, meaningful year-long internship with a company during the senior year of high school. Students develop professional skills, gain experience with a major corporation, earn $$ 10,000-$ 15,000$ during your senior year of high school, build an impressive resume, meet new students from other schools, and drive meaningful change within major corporations.

In some cases, Independent Study is offered to advance the learning experience beyond the selected scope & sequence. In a few cases, students accumulate courses beyond the high school graduation requirement, dual enrollment and sequence of Advanced Placement. As a result, Independent Study becomes an option for those students with needs beyond the identified course catalog. To accommodate such students, the school will conduct a transcript analysis and determine if Independent Study is an appropriate course of action. An approval from potential course instructors and the student’s counselor will be required before enrolling.

This course traces changes on the African Continent, the links among African regions, and the links between regions and the diaspora. It is chronologically organized, addressing community and dispersion (1400-1600), survival (1600-1800), emancipation (1800-1900), citizenship (1900-1960), and equality/social justice/social reform (1960 - present).

English I is meticulously designed to offer students a profound exploration of literary genres. Throughout the year, students will undergo intensive writing instruction, acquiring mastery in the Evidence Based Paragraph, Literary Analysis Essay, Rhetorical Analysis Essay, Poetry Explication, and the Literary Research Paper. In addition, students will delve into the intricacies of poetry explication and film analysis essays, expanding their analytical and interpretative skills. Beyond the realm of writing, this course aspires to cultivate critical thinking skills, fostering active and informed participation in academic discourse. Students will engage in discussions surrounding topical issues, literary critique, and writing style, enhancing their ability to think critically and articulate thoughts with precision. This course stands as a transformative academic experience, offering students the opportunity to refine their analytical skills, participate meaningfully in scholarly discussions, and elevate their writing proficiency.

This course provides a comprehensive study of the progression of American voices and the American experience through literature from the Colonial period to the present. Throughout the year, students will read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts which represent the experiences of the people who have come to call this country home. Students will develop the critical thinking abilities necessary to analyze literature, place it within a historical context, and use it to examine American culture. In addition to studying literature, students will write a variety of compositions based on readings and course themes. Students will engage in writing instruction which will focus on the processes for drafting literary and rhetorical analysis essays, narratives, and research papers.

Kenwood Academy's Transitional English IV course is designed to bridge the gap for high school seniors who need college-level instruction surrounding reading, writing, critical thinking, metacognition, and essential skills necessary for college success. This course is a good fit for most high school seniors who are not placed in an Early College ELA course. In this course, students' learning is accelerated to ensure that they are college-ready by the time they graduate high school. The curriculum for this course includes an in-depth focus on writing, academic discourse, and small group instruction.

This elective course surveys African-American literature from the 1700’s to the present through short works, poetry, drama, essays, speeches, letters and novels. It explores the volume and diversity of the contributions of African-Americans through literature. This journey is chronological via the middle passage, the antebellum period, the Reconstruction era, the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Neorealist transition. Students are immersed in some of the cultural customs of the African-American experience such as oral traditions, Negro spirituals and folk tales. Students will acquire proficiency in literary analysis, research strategies, writings relative to the genres, and the application of verbal and nonverbal techniques. This course can provide 4 credits.
