English Language III AP
11-12

This course prepares students for the AP Language and Composition exam. It trains students to become skilled readers and writers in diverse genres and modes of composition. This focus ultimately enables students to independently read and understand complex texts and write rich, effective prose in response to those texts. As the course progresses, students become aware of their own composition process through self-assessment and evaluations by both peers and the instructor. These skills will allow the student to read critically and write effectively in different modes in the college classroom and beyond. Students are required to take the AP English Language exam. This course combines English III course content and skills with Lone Star CollegeMontgomery courses 1301 and 1302 Composition and Rhetoric I and II. There is intensive study and practice in writing processes, from invention and researching to drafting, revising and editing, both individually and collaboratively. An emphasis is placed on effective rhetorical choices, including audience, purpose, arrangement, and style. Focus on writing the academic essay as a vehicle for learning, communicating, and critical analysis is stressed. In 1302, the focus shifts to developing research-based expository and persuasive texts, including an emphasis on research methods, critical reading of verbal, visual, and multimedia texts, and critical thinking about evidence and conclusions. Students must earn a 70 overall semester average to earn 3 hours of college credit each semester.
