I was still in middle school when I had my first story published in a professional daily newspaper, The York (Pa.) Dispatch. Seeing my byline in print reeled me in: I knew I was going to be a journalist. Since then, my passion for writing and editing has taken me to Chicago, where I graduated from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in 2004; to Miami, where I worked as a metro reporter at The Miami Herald from 2004-2009; and most recently to St. Louis, where I am now a features reporter, editor and columnist at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. I have always genuinely enjoyed helping others -- colleagues, students, friends and family -- fine-tune their writing, whether it's a newspaper story, personal essay, fiction manuscript or science report. At Varsity Tutors, I have worked with all levels of students, from fifth-graders to college freshmen. I love words, and I try to convey that by tutoring with a sense of fun when it comes to spelling, grammar and basic writing. I also help high school juniors and seniors with their college-application essays. Depending on each student's needs, we can either start from the beginning to brainstorm ideas and craft an outline, or we can collaborate on editing and revising drafts until the essays are in tip-top shape. I am an economics major with a strong interest in Macroeconomics. I love to explore different economic journals to get a head start on my academic career. I enjoy teaching other students because it helps them succeed in their studies. It also helps me learn things that I may not have come across before. I competitively play chess and am a part of the badminton club at my university. I think it is very important to stay well-rounded in life, so I take great interest in subjects outside my field of study. These include mathematics, political science, history and physics.

I also currently tutor 35 high school students in Social Studies, English, Science, and Health using computer-based curriculum at an online high school. I also tutor a "5th Hour" class each day that focuses on English and Math prep for the Arizona state-mandated AIMS test that all high school students must pass to graduate. In this class we use word problems which students focus on breaking down grammatically to then solve them mathematically. The students also have an opportunity to create their own word problems each week and then "teach" the class how to solve the problem they've created. I have been an educator for over 18 years and enjoy helping students reach their academic goals and teaching them character education as well to give them the skills they need to be successful and highly productive adults. When I am not educating students I enjoy reading fiction novels (most notably from John Grisham, Stuart Woods, and Stephen King), playing sports such as golf, basketball, football, and tennis, and working out at the gym with friends. From these degrees, I found my passion for culture and language. At Texas A&M, I helped tutor at evening ESL adult classes and was the TA for two writing-intensive courses in International Current Events and Gender and the Global Modern. In my experience tutoring, I always had the most fun exploring and relating the never-ending complexity of language and culture to our studies. Since graduation, I have volunteered with several non-profits as a translator in Guatemala and a Grant-writer state-side. I then went on to complete my Dietetic Internship and MS in Nutrition at Texas Woman's University in Denton, TX and graduated in May 2019. I became a Registered Dietitian (RD) in February 2019 and am now currently pursuing my PhD in Nutrition while working part-time as a Registered Dietitian, Graduate Assistant, and of course, tutor at Varsity Tutor!I have a special interest in academia, research, sports nutrition, private practice, leadership, psychology, and wellness for all ages.I have run 22 half-marathons, 4 full marathons, and am currently training to run the Chicago Marathon in October (my dream race)! Being an avid runner and exerciser, I know the importance of proper nutrition in athletic performance. I enjoy the challenge of tailoring sports nutrition plans for a variety of athletes and am particularly interested in endurance athletes (ultramarathons, marathons, Ironmans).I have a mission to hire RD's in the high school setting to be proactive among the vulnerable population of adolescents, especially those involved in sports.
