I seek to be a tutor because I value the importance of education and the confidence that comes from being able to understand a subject you are learning. I am currently a high school teacher in Milwaukee, WI. I teach business and hospitality / tourism to 9th-12th grade students. My interest in education started during a year of service with AmeriCorps City Year program in Milwaukee. I worked in a 9th-grade citizenship class, and helped students develop their English and social studies skills. I also have experience tutoring students in math as well. I am a graduate of UW-Madison with a Bachelors of Business Administration. Right now I work in commercial real estate with a dream of becoming an urban planner. I love learning about business, communications, history, political science, psychology, and sociology. In my free time, I enjoy making playlists, watching movies, riding my bike, going for runs, and reading.

I am a graduate of Montclair State University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Family and Child Studies with concentration in Early and Middle Childhood Education. Being a native speaker of Spanish, I began my teaching career as a World Language Teacher of Spanish. I taught Elementary Spanish to students in grades K-5. During this time, I also taught Spanish to students with special needs in self-contained classes as well as inclusion classes. It was during these years and my interaction with special need students that I realized that I loved working with the special needs population; so I decided to further my education and I obtained my Masters of Art in Teaching: Teacher of Students with Disabilities at Montclair State University. I have also worked with adults looking to learn English in an urban community based ESL program. I am a firm believer that everyone CAN LEARN! it just takes time, patience, and sometimes even an out of the box approach to learning challenging concepts. In my experience, in order to help a struggling student, you must first take the time to get to know the student and work together to find an approach that works best for that student. I am passionate about providing students the opportunity multiple ways in which they can demonstrate their learning. In my spare time, I enjoy Sudoku puzzles, gardening, cooking and most recently have taken up knitting and crocheting classes.

Since graduating with a Bachelor's in English from Elon University, I have traveled extensively and taught English to a wide variety of students. I started out teaching children aged 10-15 in Korea where I learned how to incorporate technology and multimedia materials to make lessons as engaging impossible and developed a holistic, project-based, interactive style of teaching. Later I moved to Europe where I got my Master's in Literature in Germany and began teaching adult learners and private clients of all ages English both in person and online. I was also a university English instructor to Japanese exchange students for courses such as Essay Writing, Advanced Grammar, Oral Presentation, and American Culture. I enjoy getting creative in developing lessons and getting to know my students in order to figure out the more effective way to increase their skills. I have a passion for all subjects related to English, particularly writing, but I also enjoy teaching a wide range of subjects.

I use techniques I developed as a Rutgers University professor to help high school and college students of all ages and backgrounds raise grades/overcome writing struggles. My specialties include preparation for the SAT and GRE. Having taken the GRE myself in recent years, I have acquired insight into the traps these exams lay for the unsuspecting student. Doing well on the SAT and the GRE calls not only for an ability to work very quickly under pressure but also to arrive at the answer via the shortest possible path - without wasting time on unnecessary reading. Thus, my SAT and GRE preparation program includes speed training and exercises designed to streamline the thinking process and boost test results. I also ground students in the writing, grammar and reading comprehension skills they need to perform competently on the SAT/GRE, regardless of ability level or writing/English experience. My services include editing and providing guidance in the writing of college admission letters and job applications. My passion is helping public speakers at all levels to become more effective oral communicators, including showing them how to manage speaking anxiety. My expertise in this topic has been enriched both by my experience teaching public speaking as an adjunct professor and by my experience as an award-winning public speaker with Toastmasters International.Having taught Expository Writing in college, I have tips to help students improve their grades in any course that involves writing essays, reports or reviews. As a former business journalist, I show students at all levels how to write clear business English or become better reporters and editors.I also edit reports, dissertations and any other written work and help non-native English speakers polish their conversational skills so they can deliver the crucial "elevator speeches" that can lead to career opportunities.

As a passionate and dedicated educator, I am thrilled to be a part of the Varsity Tutors team. I am certified to teach English grades 7-12 in CT, I have my master's degree in English Literature, and my bachelor's degree in English with a concentration in secondary education. I have tutored and taught in college, high school, and middle school environments. Most recently, I held high school teaching positions teaching 9th and 11th grade English. In my freshman classes, we focused on composition, and finding a voice in writing. We worked with different mentor texts to refine our writing skills, as well as read an array of literature including classics like The Odyssey and Romeo and Juliet, and more modern texts including the graphic novel, A Monster Calls. I also have teaching experience at the middle school level, teaching 7th and 8th grade Language Arts. From this position, I have experience in SBAC exam preparation. I also am a scorer for the PARCC and SAT exams, making me an expert in their layout and content. When I teach and tutor, I foster an environment that is rigorous, well-supported, and comfortable. I look forward to adding to my love of teaching English by tutoring students as well!

Karthik

Abstract Algebra Tutor • +56 Subjects

Greetings, my name is Karthik! My undergraduate major was math and physics through Northeastern University, and I currently am working on a master's in medical physics at the University of Kentucky. Both have required a great deal of self-study, and my penchant for self-motivated learning was kick started by an experience I had in middle school. It was a 3-week summer program called VAMPY within which I learned to self-study on account of the math classes consisting primarily of studying out of a textbook, working problems, and taking exams with the professors and TAs only there to facilitate our learning but not to lecture or assign work outside of the exams. I did Algebra 2 the first time and Calculus 1 & 2 the second time, after which I was distinctly prepared to tackle more advanced material (e.g., linear algebra, real analysis, topology, and quantum mechanics). Before I ever started tutoring formally, it was not uncommon for peers to remark that I taught better than the teacher whenever I helped them with their work.I started tutoring formally in undergrad via a mix of online tutoring and university sponsored peer tutoring, later taking on responsibilities as a student grader and TA. I was the president of the math club and vice president of our chapter of the Society of Physics Students. While at first I was prone to lecturing due to my assumption that others found theory as elucidating as I, my sessions are now dominated by working through problems provided by either the student or me. Also software visualization is a boon whenever my drawing skills don't pass muster. Ultimately, my purpose is to cultivate disciplined learning and excellence in STEM, whether that be for a class or purely out of curiosity/passion, so please do not hesitate to reach out if you think I can help you achieve your goals.
