How can French tutoring help you?

French is the official language of France and is spoken by 274 million people worldwide. It is the fifth most used language in the world, coming in behind Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, and Arabic. A large number of words in the English language come from French origins, such as deja vu, cafe, omelette, and many others. French grammar is similar to Spanish and Italian and many words in French that end in "-tion" or "-sion" end the same way in English, such as participation, action, decision, and passion. However, determining word gender, verb conjugation, and the pronunciation of certain nasal sounds may make it a difficult language to learn. If you find yourself struggling with different nouns, adjectives, and other parts of speech, a tutor may be the answer. Let Varsity Tutors find you an expert French tutor in Louisville, KY, with the experience, skills, and teaching approach that matches your needs.

French is an important language to learn for business and trade purposes, and is the only language besides English that is spoken across all continents and in nearly every country. French is also the second most taught language in the world. Learning any second language may be difficult, and working with a tutor may try to help you focus on areas where you have the most need. An expert tutor in Louisville, KY, may plan engaging study sessions with your interests in mind so you may enjoy learning about French. An experienced tutor may work with you to assess your strengths and weaknesses and help you to meet your personal goals. A tutor familiar with the French language may present new vocabulary often, present information using both oral and written techniques, and help you in learning the phonemes, lexemes, morphemes, syntax, and context of the language.

Session Summaries by French Tutors

French Tutoring review by Roshan in Louisville, KY
In this session, we covered a lot of grammar rules and pronunciation techniques. The student is steadily learning to pronounce different but close words and vowels. We also covered vocabulary for parts of the body and played a memorization game. She is slowly building her confidence in her speaking abilities.

We did role playing exercises using phrases and vocabulary that she would need in those circumstances during her trip to France, such as at the airport and in a hotel or restaurant.

French Tutoring review by John in Louisville, KY
I am using the book Easy French Step-by-Step as a format for phrase repetition with the student. I speak a phrase in the book and have him repeat the phrase. He will be listening to Learning French with Stories outside our sessions. This will help him pinpoint how words and phrases are spelled and written. He will be obtaining a copy of Easy French Step-by-Step so he can look along in the book with me while I use the Kindle app on my computer.

French Tutoring review by Briana in Louisville, KY
Today was great! The students were enthusiastic and excited about the session. They were happy to show me what they had practiced throughout the week and were eager to learn more. Today, we learned emotions and built on prior vocabulary and phrases that we have done the previous weeks. They are definitely beginning to remember words and phrases based on repetition.

French Tutoring review by Alyson in Louisville, KY
Today we worked on conjugating a big paragraph into two different tenses - from present to passe compose and also imparfait. We also made sure the student understood the vocabulary therein. I also dug in the fact that with reflexive verbs, all past tenses need to be used with etre. Lastly, we worked on an exercise with the future tense. It was fun to talk about his personal ideas of what his future could contain. We also talked about how he is applying to do an exchange program in the spring, and I suggested that we could focus more on conversational practice - speaking more French with each other as opposed to mostly in English like we're currently doing. I said that it would be good for him because it would be low pressure as we aren't in a "classroom." He seemed very open to the idea, so I think we'll use French more and more per session in increasing increments.

French Tutoring review by Randa in Louisville, KY
Last Thursday I gave the student a writing assignment over the weekend, so we started with that. He wrote a short report on the political debate. Then we continued the review of present, passe compose, and imparfait with the ten target verbs. Next week we will continue the review with future and conditional tenses. I used the remaining time to introduce some grammar that we will be working on this year: subjunctive tense and object pronouns.
