Session Summaries by Finance Tutors

Finance Tutoring review by Stephanie in Joliet, IL
The student completed her second tutoring session aimed at improving her understanding of statistics. During the session, she primarily focused on working on her statistics homework. Specifically, the assignment required her to run a number of linear and multiple regression analyses and interpret the results. Both the student and I had previously completed the analyses in preparation for the session. As a result, we reviewed the output together and discussed responses to the assigned questions. I also showed her how to perform a number of functions in SPSS (e.g., check for linearity and normality; create a scatter plot matrix; find the Regression Sum of Squares and Residual or Error Sum of Squares). Finally, we discussed ideas for her upcoming biostatistics research project as well as the components of a methods section in a research paper.

Today the student was working mainly with one-dimensional kinematics, and how to figure out what information is being given in questions about that. She has done very well with most of those questions, so we worked on a few of the trickier ones and on a few techniques to help organize information.

Today we worked on the student's Norman Rockwell paper. He finds generating concepts from his reading to be a challenge. He was very positive about our collaboration. No new strategies were introduced today. He must write an introduction and conclusion for tomorrow morning's session. No scores are yet available. The big win is that the student did NOT procrastinate! He had pages of writing completed in advance for us to revise together!

I gave the student several multiple-choice questions involving normal distributions, notation, and parameters vs statistics. The rest of the session covered discrete random variable distributions. TI-84 instruction included the procedure of using lists to compute the mean and variance of a discrete random variable. I recommended that he read the chapter about discrete distributions, to practice working with lists on his TI-84 and working normal distribution word problems in his text for next week.

We went over English today, and the student is weak in this area in term of knowing the rules, but more so in testing skills. He did have a great attitude, and by the end of the session we it was obvious some of his testing skills improved. I've given practice problems. We will continue to work on this next session.

We worked on logical reasoning and logic games; although the student needs some direction on both sections in order to understand what is being asked, he is improving on recognizing the premises/conclusions in logical reasoning and knowing what strategy to use in logic games. I have sent some homework to do before our next session and next time we will work on all three sections.
