My name is Olivia. I started studying French when I was in high school and fell in love with it. After a short visit to Paris with the French Club at my high school, I knew I wanted to be able to speak it fluently. I majored in French in college and spent six months living in Aix-en-Provence where I took intensive French courses and lived with a French woman. Inspired by my experience, I hoped to come back and work. After graduating in 2013 I became an English Teaching assistant in a high school and two middle schools in Tulle. I fell in love with teaching English and after I returned to the States I became a substitute teacher and pursued my TEFL certification. The following year I became a teaching assistant again and this time worked in Brive-la-Gaillarde. My time in living in France has allowed me to become fluent in French as well as having a keen understanding of French culture. I have two years of experience teaching English as a second language through my time as an language assistant.I have passion for teaching and sharing language and culture. I received my Bachelor of Arts from Northeastern Illinois University in Middle-Level Education and Elementary Education, with minors in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) and Math and Science Concepts. I am designated as "highly qualified" by the state of Illinois to teach mathematics, science, social sciences, and language arts. I believe that math is the "language of the universe", and it is imperative that all students can communicate mathematically. I have also tutored in some capacity for the last 15 years and have significant experience working with gifted students, English Learners, and remote instruction.

I studied at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and graduated magna cum laude in 2017 with two degrees: A Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Studies (Playwriting). At SMU, I was also initiated into Kappa Tau Alpha, an honor society recognizing academic excellence in journalism and mass communication. After graduation, I spent five years on the staff of The Dallas Morning News (one of the top circulating newspapers in the United States) as a Digital Editor and Staff Writer. I tutor in a broad range of subjects at the college and high school level, including but not limited to American and European history, creative writing, English, essay writing and editing, grammar, literature, news writing, public speaking, Shakespeare, social studies and text analysis. I am incredibly passionate about helping students improve their writing. I firmly believe that writing is a foundational skill that sets students up to comprehend the world around them and become lifelong learners. At its core essence, writing is storytelling, and I train storytellers. When away from my computer, I enjoy cooking, reading, traveling and playing with my dog, a Wheaten Terrier named Doak. In college, I was just beginning to learn what it meant to take full responsibility of ones own life and future. I have made a lot of mistakes. However, that has never stopped me a day in my life. While in college, I worked as Freelance Computer Technician and Computer Modeler/Builder for eight years, tutored hundreds of students free of charge for eight years, and doing research about ten hours a week. After graduation, I took my first full time job in Japan as an English teacher. The reason for this was because I wanted to feel my independence but in the most extreme fashion imaginable. In Japan, I didnt know the language, the people, where I was going, and what to do there. In under four months, I learned Japanese and was able to talk fluidly and in under nine months I achieved fluency.I bring this up, because in Japan, I explored myself and the world in order to get a better understanding of how to learn and how I learn. Not only that, but what it takes to adapt to a civilization and lifestyle that you have not been accustomed to. This is important because in order for you to have change, you have to make the uncomfortable choices in life.This experience afforded me the possibility to change and genuinely understand the world around me. I understand that there is much I still have to learn, but it has equipped me with skills that I would not have found using the normal route. For this I will forever be grateful and I wouldnt change a thing. My mistakes have led me to be the person that I am. I will never deny them or hide. In March 2006, I received a Master of Arts in "Security Studies (Homeland Defense and Security)" from the Naval Postgraduate School's Center for Homeland Defense and Security. I am admitted to practice law in California, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, and the U.S. Virgin Islands and have worked in both the private and government sectors.Since 2006, I have been a writer, homeland security/emergency management consultant, and instructor. I teach homeland security, emergency management, and public health classes, and design homeland security classes. My favorite subjects to teach are government/political science and homeland security. The first helps me understand our amazing system of government, and the second is about protecting it.My teaching philosophy stems from theories about adult learning (andragogy). Rather than the teacher simply spewing facts (pedagogy), the teacher is a facilitator of learning to a motivated learner. Students need to know facts, but learning is more than that. It includes thinking about the material.
