What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Go over strengths and weaknesses.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Show them how to utilize their textbook more efficiently.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Create a plan with certain goals to keep them reach for more.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Go step by step through the process to see exactly where they are getting stuck at.
What is your teaching philosophy?
To never let a student go unprepared.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Make sure they know how to sound out words, and encourage them to work on their vocabulary.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Flashcards and constructive, reinforcing criticism.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
It would be complicated with some subjects, but incorporate the student's interests or create a type of reward system to keep them focused and on track.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
In order to analyze a student's comprehension of a subject and material, I will prepare practice quizzes and tests to make sure we are staying up to par.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Continue to reassure them that they will eventually get it. Let them know that all it takes is time and understanding the steps, and eventually, it all comes together and make sense.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Most material is learned in a step by step process. If you start by working on the more simple material and work your way into the later, more difficult steps, it is simple to find out just where someone is beginning to struggle.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
The materials I use during a tutoring session include, but are not limited to, a TI calculator, my computer, sometimes my phone, and a variety of apps for different subjects.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Most successful tutoring is based on speed. What speed the student is moving at and what speed they are wanting to obtain, in correlation to the speed that their class might be moving at. Most adapting breaks down to moving at the appropriate speed that the student feels comfortable with.
