As an instructor of the lower level German classes, my goal is to introduce the German language to students through culture, and to show new language learners the joys and possibilities that come with learning a new language. On the intermediate and advanced level, the focus is on teaching language through culture, as well. I love to discover new music, magazines (all languages!) and books and have been on sports teams all my life. Before college I rode horses for as long as I can think and ran track and cross-country. Lately I have been keeping active and balanced doing Crossfit. I've never tried yoga, but really want to; it is the very next item on the to-do list.

For the past two years I've interned for a literary magazine called the Chicago Quarterly Review, considering story submissions and writing reader reports for the senior editor. Although currently living in Sag Harbor, I am in the process of applying to law school, with the goal of becoming either an attorney or a law professor.In my four years at Carleton, I tutored sixth graders in reading and math through the Northfield Tackling Obstacles and Raising College Hopes program (TORCH). I greatly enjoyed this experience, as I discovered my love of teaching. I tutor students of all ages in reading, math, government, and chess. In my sessions, I strive to encourage young people to arrive at ideas and solutions to problems themselves, with an emphasis on instilling habits of critical thinking and open-mindedness.Outside of academic pursuits, I have a love for blues guitar (Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan are my favorites), chess, and old movies.

I am in my thirteenth year of teaching (I taught sixth-grade/all content areas for the first 11 years of my career). I am capable of tutoring all core elementary subjects and tutoring math at the middle grades/junior high level. I have been teaching for eight years, and nothing brings me greater joy than watching students grow into the readers, writers, and thinkers I know they can be. Most of that growth happens because I try to make the teaching environment a safe, comfortable, laughter-filled place where students can explore new ideas and express their thoughts and feelings. I believe what makes me unique as a teacher is that I take the time to understand the needs of my students, work with them to come with a learning strategy that works for them, and create a measurable objective to work towards. The most daunting goal can be obtained with the right planning and cooperation. By showing the students that I am willing to work hard, I believe it motivates them to try just as hard.

I believe Art is a way of communicating ideas, emotions, and thoughts that would be difficult to express in other ways. Through the course of my artistic pursuits, I have gained an understanding of how art can affect even the most inexperienced artist in a positive and everlasting way. According to Barnes-Smith in expressive arts as a means of increasing well-being in children, "[Art] provides the opportunity for individuals to explore their emotions and inner selves in order to deal with stress, explore issues, and improve self-esteem through healthy and creative modes" (Barnes-Smith et al., 2015, p. 5). I believe this as I have experienced it in my own life. One of my goals is to share this knowledge and to help others experience the powerful healing attributes of art in all its forms.
