About Me

As a person with a disability I have lived experience of struggling in elementary and middle school. Now I hold a doctorate degree. I have first-hand experience of the tremendous beneficial impact of good teachers, tutors and mentors in my life. I hold a bachelor's degree majoring in biology from Carleton University, located in Ottawa, Canada. I hold of Master of Science degree (MSc) from Memorial University of Newfoundland, located in St. John's, Canada. I hold a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Environmental Studies from York University, located in Toronto, Canada. I have 15 years of experience teaching science and math courses to undergraduate university students. During my MSc I worked as a teaching assistant and taught biology and ecology courses to science majors at the first, second- and third-year levels. During my PhD I was a teaching assistant and course instructor. I taught biology, ecology, environmental science and statistics (math) to non-majors. Many of the students I taught had not taken a science or math course since grade 10. I learned from my students that even at the university level much of their discomfort and/or dislike of science and math came from feeling a lack of confidence rather than a lack of interest or ability. Building student confidence in a subject is critical for putting them on a pathway to academic success. Subjects that I tutor include Biology, Ecology, Coding (specifically the R Programming Language), Statistics and Environmental Science.
