About Me
I have been successfully sharing my passion for programming with students for the past five years teaching high school computer science classes. I especially enjoy teaching Java. Several of my students have received high grades on the AP CSA exam. My favorite thing is helping students overcome hurdles to understanding and applying complex programming concepts. I can empathize with students who are struggling and apply creative ways to help them see how logical thinking and coding work together to solve problems. I like sharing how having computer science skills opened up enjoyable and rewarding career opportunities I never could have imagined while working at IBM. I worked on modern Web application development teams for more than twenty years before I retired in 2018. After retiring, I missed solving programming problems. Since I have been teaching I have discovered that working with students and helping them learn computer science skills is the most rewarding thing I have done.
Hobbies & Interests
I enjoy traveling and spending time with family. My wife and I enjoyed traveling by land and sea on a trip to Alaska last year. This year our travels included a River Cruise on the Danube in Europe. We also enjoy landscaping and flower gardens around our home. Aside from that, many of my favorite activities involve working and/or playing on the computer or XBOX. The technological advancements seen in digital games amaze and entertain me. Half the time while I'm playing games I am wondering how in the world they coded it. I enjoy feeling some level of kinship with the game developers through teaching computer skills to students!
