About Me

I have been successfully sharing my passion for programming with students for the past five years teaching high school computer science classes. My students say they like my friendly, fun, low-pressure, patient teaching style. I have taught AP CSA (Java), Intro to Java, and Intro to Python. I especially enjoy teaching Java. Several of my students have received high grades on the AP CSA exam. My favorite thing is helping students overcome hurdles to understanding and applying complex programming concepts. I can empathize with students who are struggling and apply creative ways to help them see how logical thinking and coding work together to solve problems. I like sharing how having computer science skills opened up enjoyable and rewarding career opportunities I never could have imagined while working at IBM. I worked on modern Web application development teams for more than twenty years before I retired in 2018. After retiring, I missed solving programming problems. Since I have been teaching I have discovered that working with students and helping them learn computer science skills is the most rewarding thing I have done.
