About Me

Influenced by the many good teachers and mentors I had as a teenager in High School I began my teaching career immediately upon graduating from NYU School of Arts and Sciences and later from NYU School of Education where I studied mathematics education. During those first eight wonderful years teaching math to both Middle and High School students, I began to gain expertise in middle school math (5-8), Algebra, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus. I also helped students prepare for their SAT Math exams. I loved my job and my students but left teaching to better support my family and to see how I could apply my mathematical skills in the business world. I worked for the accounting firm PricewatehouseCoopers applying my skills to the valuation of pension and medical benefits for corporations and non-profits. I retired early from PwC in order to return to teaching in 2012 with the freedom and intent to once again do what I loved to do most: help young men and women gain the math skills to achieve their academic goals : whether that be to just finish required courses, or move to high level pre-college programs in pursuit of a college education in a high tech world where mathematics is key to success. Upon returning in 2012 I first worked part time in an inner-city middle school for 2 years, then took a full-time position as Math Department Chair at an independent private school for grades 6-8 where I had my first teaching position. During this time I transitioned my teaching style due to COVID and the need to learn remote teaching tools and modify in-class teaching methodologies to accommodate hybrid learning while at the same time enhancing my subject matter expertise in Algebra I CC. I learned every available tool to deliver the highest quality math education during this stressful time. After COVID I decided to leave NYC and got a job teaching Algebra I in a trauma based middle school for girls from low-income families in Providence RI. It was there in Providence that I saw the enormous gap in quality math education that was being offered and I was determined to raise the quality of education in that community to the same standards that were demanded by parents for my positions in more affluent schools in NYC. I brought to bear every resource and technique (some of which we had learned during COVID) for the benefit of my students. I believe in quality education for all and for providing the same resources to all (like tutoring) in order to eliminate the inequalities that are inherent in our school systems. If you've seen the Disney movie Ratatoulle you know the famous book by Chef Gusteau: "Anyone can cook". I believe, with the right teacher, that "Anyone can do Math!"
