This course helps students' fundamental literacy skills development. This course will focus on building adolescent literacy practices, including the use of individualized interventions as appropriate. This course takes place in a language lab setting, including both drill and practice opportunities as well as applying these skills into the Spring Literature and Composition I course. This course will be taken in the Fall and will replace an elective spot, and Literature and Composition I will be taken in the Spring.

This course develops the integrated skill set that comprises the English Language Arts discipline to ensure that students are on track to be college and work ready and focuses on the interpretation, evaluation, construction, and design of texts across genres and modes in a variety of real-world, academic, and disciplinary contexts while sustaining and building mastery of language applications and discipline-specific practices.

This course is designed to prepare students for Advanced Placement English/Language Arts courses. Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course.

This course focuses on the study of American literature, writing modes and genres, and essential conventions for reading, writing, and speaking. Students develop an understanding of chronological context and the relevance of period structures in American literature in addition to the ways the period of literature affects its structure and meaning. Students read a variety of informational and literary texts in all genres and modes of discourse. While expository writing is the focus in American literature, students will also demonstrate competency in a variety of writing genres: narrative, persuasive, and technical. Students will engage in research, timed writing, and the writing process. Instruction in language conventions will occur within the context of reading, writing, and speaking. Students demonstrate an understanding of listening, speaking, and viewing skills for a variety of purposes.

This is an accelerated college prep course that covers a variety of literary genres and multicultural writers in a chronological or thematic pattern. It emphasizes control in expository writing (thesis support) and argumentative essays. This course moves toward precision in literary analysis, expository and persuasive writing, and refining research skills. Students will demonstrate an understanding of listening, speaking, and viewing skills for a variety of purposes as well as using correct grammar, mechanics, and usage. This course is designed to prepare students for Advanced Placement Language Arts courses. Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course.

This course aligns to an introductory college-level rhetoric and writing curriculum, which requires students to develop evidence-based analytic and argumentative essays that proceed through several stages/drafts. Students evaluate, create, and cite research to support their arguments. Additionally, students read and analyze the rhetorical elements and their effects in non-fiction texts, including graphic images as forms of text, from many disciplines and historical periods. The course will involve independent study and frequent written analysis to prepare students for the AP English Language and Composition exam. Students earn an additional 1.0 quality point towards their GPA for this course.

This course focuses on world literature by and about people of diverse ethnic backgrounds. Students explore themes of linguistic and cultural diversity by comparing, contrasting, analyzing, and critiquing writing styles and universal themes. The students write expository, analytical, and response essays. A research component is critical. The students observe and listen critically and respond appropriately to written and oral communication. The students understand and acquire new vocabulary and use it correctly in reading, writing, and speaking.

This course is an accelerated college-prep class designed to focus on the writing process (planning, drafting, and revising). The students will focus on different writing genres and organizational structures: expository, persuasive, narrative, descriptive, comparison-contrast, exemplification, process analysis, classification, cause and effect, and definition. Advanced grammar skills will be a major component of this class and an emphasis on research will be also required. Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course.

This course focuses on skills to culminate in creating and developing dramatic writing for theatrical media with special emphasis on film and television. Includes development of 'writerly stance' by reading, viewing, and analyzing tests and visual media from a writer's point of view, with focus on understanding the construction process and including the application of conventions of standard English grammar and usage. Students will also earn an embedded Honors Theatre and Literature I Fine Arts credit on their transcript; students will receive the same final grade for both courses. Students earn an additional 0.5 quality point towards their GPA for this course.

This course aligns to an introductory college-level literary analysis course. The course engages students in the close reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature to deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure. As they read, students consider a work's structure, style, and themes, as well as its use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. Writing assignments include expository, analytical, and argumentative essays that require students to analyze and interpret literary works. The course will involve independent study and frequent written analysis to prepare students for the AP English Literature and Composition Exam. Students earn an additional 1.0 quality point towards their GPA for this course.
