This one-year course provides instruction in the English Language Arts strands identified by the Common Core State Standards as reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. This college-level curriculum engages students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of rhetorical contexts and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Both their writing and their reading should make students aware of the interactions among a writer's purposes, audience expectations, and subjects, as well as the way genre conventions and the resources of language contribute to the effectiveness of writing.

This one-year course is designed with an emphasis on meeting the requirements of the College Board Advanced Placement AP English Literature and Composition examination. This college-level curriculum engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students consider a work structure, style and themes, as well as smaller-scale elements such as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone.

This course is designed to strengthen college-level writing skills, with particular attention to audience, purpose, and rhetorical situation focusing on the writing process and introducing research. This dual enrollment course is offered as part of a formal agreement between CCSD and NSHE Institution(s).

This course is a continuation and extension of ENG 101 with attention to analytical reading and writing, critical thinking, and research methodologies, while emphasizing interpretation, analysis, synthesis, and argument.
