\*Course code dependent on grade level AND English class enrollment The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is a transitional program designed to support students with English language acquisition. ELs have been screened/ tested with the state-mandated English Language Proficiency Assessment (ACCESS for ELLs) and have scored less than English proficient on the speaking, listening, reading or writing subtests. The courses offered through this program address the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework in alignment with Tennessee Academic Content Standards. This course is designed for students who have a composite score of 2.5 and above on WIDA ACCESS, and still need dedicated ESL classroom time. The curricular focus will follow the MSCS reading prescriptions for English I, II, III or IV respectively. A student enrolled in this course will also be scheduled for an English class that corresponds, for example: ESL 9 Concurrent English I AND English I. Successful course completion will count as an elective. ESL Courses may count toward two (2) of the four (4) English credits required for graduation. ELs must earn two units of regular English to complete graduation requirements, one of which must be an EOC course. ESL courses that do not count towards the English graduation requirement may count toward the elective focus in Humanities. Course codes for ESL classes may be “stacked” if the curriculum aligns, e.g. ESL 9 / ESL 11 Concurrent with English I, ESL 10/ 11 Concurrent with English II.
