Sylvia Mendez Newcomers School – Chinese I

Grade Level: 8 (Students must successfully complete this course and demonstrate sufficient proficiency to be eligible for Chinese Il in ninth grade.) Students will develop skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Beginning text materials employ pinyin (the phonetic system indicating Chinese pronunciation in the English alphabet) and simplified characters. Traditional forms of characters are also taught. Students will take part in various activities and projects to enhance their language learning. They will expand their understanding of culture through language instruction and studying festivals, philosophy, geography, and arts. This course is offered at Ferndale IB MYP only.
