These courses are designed for students who are heritage Spanish speakers or have had prior language arts instruction in Spanish through a Dual Language program or in their home countries. Ninth graders will be placed in Spanish Lit & Comp I or II based on the results of the STAR assessment test given to eighth-graders (or teacher recommendation). The courses will reinforce and develop students’ ability to read, write, listen, speak, and think critically in Spanish through the study of a variety of topics and literary texts. Spanish Lit & Comp classes incorporate cultural perspectives from throughout the Spanish-speaking world and examine the rich diversity of Hispanic culture through literature, film, theater, articles, and music. The Spanish Lit & Comp III curriculum is designed to prepare students to enter IB Spanish Language and Literature SLI the following year. Successful completion of this course helps fulfill the second language requirement for admission to state colleges and universities in Oregon. (W2331/W2332) IB Spanish Language and Literature SL I (2 semesters/ 1.0 Cr World Language / Language Arts Grades: 11/12 In this course, students will engage in close study and interpretation of a variety of texts created by Hispanic authors and artists. This includes analysis of literary works (novels, poetry, short stories, theater) and non-literary written and visual texts. Examples of non-literary texts might include advertisements, artwork, blogs, films, flyers, photography, podcasts, and political cartoons. During this first half of a two-year IB course, students will practice written and oral analysis of texts and prepare for the Internal Assessment in the fall of SLII. Successful completion of this course in Spanish helps fulfill the second language requirement for admission to state colleges and universities in Oregon. Students may be able to complete independent work in order to test at the HL level if they are working towards the IB Diploma. Please talk to your counselor for more information about this option. (W2341/W2342) IB Spanish Language and Literature SLII 2 semesters/ 1.0 Cr. World Language / Language Arts Grades: 12 This course is a continuation of work started in junior year in IB Spanish Language and Literature SLI. Students will continue to develop their skills of observation, interpretation, and analysis through the study and interpretation of a variety of texts created by Hispanic authors and artists. Students will practice their skills through a variety of written and oral activities and complete the Internal Assessment and written IB exams in May. Successful completion of this course in Spanish helps fulfill the second language requirement for admission to state colleges and universities in Oregon. Students may be able to complete independent work in order to test at the HL level if they are working towards the IB Diploma. Please talk to your counselor for more information about this option.
