Southridge High School – American Sign Language (ASL) I
Mar 2026 · 2nd Semester
In this entry-level, total immersion language learning course, students will develop beginning-level skills in the interpersonal (expressive/receptive), interpretive (receptive), and presentational (expressive signing/glossing) communication modes. Instruction is total immersion mode and will focus on the comprehension and performance of simple language tasks in the present tense, such as introductions, descriptions of family and friends, and discussion of school and activities. Students will also develop language learning strategies and study the history and culture of the target. They will compare and contrast ideas and practices between their first language culture and their developing world language culture. English may be used to moderate cultural and language differences between Spoken languages and Visual Languages to allow for L2 learners to connect concepts and ideas in both languages. Successful completion of this course helps fulfill the second language requirement for admission to state colleges and universities in Oregon and fulfills Dual Credit College Requirements.
