Southridge High School – Race and Ethnic Studies
Mar 2026 · 2nd Semester
This course explores issues of race and ethnicity as social constructs in order to gain a deeper understanding of race and racism. Students will develop a critical lens of history by studying the scholarship of expert historians and sociologists. This course prepares students for a diverse world - whether that means learning about other peoples and histories, one’s own background and the histories that shaped our families, or how these are all intertwined. There will be a focus on local history throughout the course. “Local” may mean the Portland metro area, Oregon, or the Western U.S. *This course is not part of the required SS course sequence in grades 9-11 towards graduation, but may be taken for Social Studies credit recovery or as an elective (may not replace Civics credit).
