This required course explores the story of the United States post-Reconstruction through the present day. Students will develop and demonstrate factual and conceptual knowledge, as well as critical thinking, communication, and research skills. Student learning experiences include (but are not limited to) evaluating and analyzing the importance of placeby developing geographic skills and knowledge and applying that to national, local, and Oregon Tribal history. Students will also investigate the concept of belonging through historical themes that allow them to consider issues like power and identity and how to recognize and value the many communities that collectively form the United States. In the second semester, students will examine aspects of peace and conflict in the 20th century to develop an understanding of the world as it is today. Finally, students will study rights movements and practice civic engagement in a final unit based on the concept of justice. In addition to these conceptual explorations of modern U.S. history, students will practice and develop the skills and habits of mind to be successful in advanced and rigorous coursework in later years. Ultimately, students will be consistently invited to use and apply what they’ve learned in class to be active, compassionate, and contributing members of our community. $$S500XD$$ Civics Dual Language in Spanish for those in the Dual Language Program (Not offered for 2025-2026 school year) This required DL course is taught in Spanish as part of our Dual Language program and is the first half of a two-semester required course sequence for all 9th or 10th-grade DL students. The Civics standards are now required by the state of Oregon in order to graduate high school. If this course is not completed with a passing grade, it must be made up by a Civics recovery class in English during the junior or senior year. In this course, students will examine civics, which includes the rights and responsibilities of living and participating in our democracy and society. Units include the foundations and structures of government, power and democracy, and action projects with student action and participation in creating a just community. Skills emphasized in this course include written and oral communication, research, and analysis and evaluation of history, citizenship, government, and politics. $$S605XD$$ Economics in Spanish for those in the Dual Language Program (Not offered for 2025-2026 school year) This required DL course is taught in Spanish as part of our Dual Language program and is the second half of a two-semester required course sequence for all 9th or 10th-grade DL students. This one-semester course covers the state Economics standards and offers an introduction to the basic concepts of micro and macroeconomics. The first unit of study includes economic foundations, macroeconomics, and what it means to be a producer and consumer. The second unit examines the interactions of world economies, globalization, and the role of the United States and other countries in world economics. Unit three examines the skills of what it means to be financially responsible and personal finance. Skills emphasized in this course include written and oral communication, research, and analysis and evaluation of economics and our role in a global and local economy.
