Publications 1-2 is a dynamic and interactive class where students learn the essentials of journalism and news production. In this course, students will explore the principles of news writing, reporting, and editing while developing critical skills in research, interviewing, and storytelling. Students will gain hands-on experience by contributing to the school newspaper, Voices of Roosevelt, by covering topics ranging from school events to community issues, opinion pieces, and feature stories. The class will emphasize accuracy, ethics, and journalistic integrity, as well as fostering creativity and collaboration in a newsroom environment. Key topics include: The basics of journalistic writing, including news leads, headlines, and structure Gathering and verifying information through interviews and research Writing feature articles, opinion pieces, and investigative reports Basics of photography and layout design for newspapers Deadlines and production schedules in a professional setting By the end of the course, students will have created a portfolio of published work and developed a deeper understanding of the role of journalism in society.
