In ninth grade, students continue to build upon skills previously learned in earlier grades. There is a continued emphasis on reading comprehension by comparing fiction and nonfiction texts. Students apply knowledge of literary terms and analyze a variety of genres while expanding vocabulary and writing skills.

In tenth grade, students continue to build upon skills learned in earlier grades with sustained emphasis on reading comprehension. Students analyze cultural and social function and universal themes of fictional texts from different cultures while developing vocabulary and writing skills.

Students continue to build communication skills working both independently and in collaborative groups with emphasis on reading comprehension of fiction and nonfiction texts. Students conduct comparative analyses and examine fiction texts by American authors.

In twelfth grade there is sustained emphasis on reading comprehension of fiction and nonfiction texts. Students review multiple texts to identify and evaluate resources to make decisions and solve problems while continuing writing development for workplace and postsecondary education.

AP Language and Composition emphasizes the analysis of nonfiction. Students read a variety of works from several genres, time periods, and cultures. Varied composition assignments require close reading, rhetorical analysis, and understanding of rhetorical forms and terms.

AP Literature and Composition emphasizes the study and practice of writing and the analysis of literature including prose, fiction, poetry, and drama. Students read works from several genres and cultures with varied composition assignments.

Creative Writing provides a supportive environment in which students write prose, poetry, and drama. The course focuses on fundamental elements of creative writing including developing strategies for writing creatively, practicing narrative writing, using poetic devices, and developing voice.

This course introduces students to myths and legends from past and present world cultures. Students recognize cultural archetypes, acquire tools for comparing diverse cultures, and appreciate the power of myths in stimulating human imagination and cultural development.

Algebra I incorporates concepts and skills necessary for students to pursue rigorous advanced mathematics. The fundamental concepts of equality, functions, multiple representations, probability, and data analysis guide activities that enhance problem solving skills using technology.

Geometry is the combined study of plane, solid, and coordinate geometric concepts providing skills necessary for advanced mathematics. Investigations of lines, planes, congruence, similarity, areas, volumes, circles, and three-dimensional shapes with emphasis on reasoning and proof.

Algebra II provides thorough study of functions including parent functions, families of functions, and transformational graphing. Continued study of equations, systems, inequalities, polynomials, and imaginary numbers in the complex number system.

Precalculus emphasizes polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and rational functions, sequences and series, conic sections, and limits. Trigonometry topics include triangular and circular definitions of trigonometric functions, identities, and special angle formulas.
