Students in this course will be challenged to see movies as more than just a form of entertainment and study them for their technical, artistic, literary, historical, and cultural value. Students will learn film techniques, history, and genres; analyze film through a variety of approaches; and develop an appreciation of film as a cultural medium, an art form, and a type of text. They will also consider how the major components of film (narrative, cinematography, mise en scene, editing, and sound), whether intentional or unintentional, come together to create meaning. Additionally, students will develop their own cinematic projects including a screenplay and a short film..
