The purpose of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the semantic, structural, and rhetorical resources of the English language. The course is designed to develop flexible writers who are able to write in various modes for a variety of purposes. Based on the results of the Advanced Placement Exam, college credit may be awarded by participating colleges and universities. This course will meet graduation requirements for English. Students study and discuss great works of literature from various genres and periods. Frequent reading and writing assignments focus on the critical analysis of literature and are designed to develop the students’ understanding of style, subject, and audience. Students will be placed in this course by their counselor, with consideration given to the student’s Reading FAST score. The course helps the student develop the habits and attitudes that will result in students becoming more effective readers. Students will explore strategies for reading, writing, and thinking. Instruction will focus on fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking, and test-taking strategies. Students will improve test-taking skills and learn problem solving techniques to prepare for the FAST.

These courses are designed to provide the foundation for future secondary mathematics courses and develop skills needed to solve mathematical problems. Topics shall include, but are not limited to functions, linear equations and inequalities, systems of linear equation and inequalities, polynomials, simplifying radical and rational expressions, solving and graphing quadratic equations, and linear regression analysis including residuals and introductory probability. This course is taught using a $\\mathrm { T I } 3 0 \\mathrm { X a }$ calculator. Honors courses at OHS are taught at a rigorous pace; prerequisite and fundamental skills will not be taught.
