Students will prepare oral presentations and develop strategies for listening critically to the presentations of others. Reading: Students will read and interpret increasingly complex literary and informational texts. Writing: Students will write narrative, informational, and persuasive texts and work to establish a controlling idea and provide relevant support. Students will work to revise grammar, usage, and mechanics to achieve greater clarity. Research: Students will analyze informational materials, including electronic sources, for their relevance and accuracy.

Oral Expression: Students will gather and organize content that will successfully influence an audience. Students will listen actively to group members when accomplishing a group goal. Students will have the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to access college-level texts while also enhancing their academic vocabulary. Students will read a number of different texts, both fiction and nonfiction, from various genres in building their knowledge of text structures, the reading process, and literary techniques. Students will use textual evidence to support claims, determine themes/central ideas, and analyze authors’ choices in the writing. The students will also improve their understanding of author’s craft and structure. Students will have the opportunity to increase the level of sophistication in their writing, better preparing them for college and beyond. Students will read and write argumentative, informative/explanatory, and narrative texts while also expanding their understanding of effective writing. Throughout the course, students will produce clear and coherent writing, develop and strengthen writing, and use technology to produce, publish and update individual or shared writing products. Finally, students will have the opportunity to engage in research projects before presenting those to a formal audience.

Students enrolled in Honors English 9 will accomplish the standards outlined in CP English 9 while independently reading literary and informational texts of greater complexity. Students will write longer and more complicated essays including literary analysis, will revise writing to make it more concise and precise, and will experiment with writing more sophisticated sentences.

Students will engage in activities that build on skills included in Composition & Literature 2 in order to continue to strengthen the skills of reading comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency using diverse texts that reflect both literary and informational content. Writing instruction will emphasize crafting coherent paragraphs, essays, and responses to texts, with a focus on grammar, sentence structure, and organization. The course integrates language development with critical thinking and academic skills, enabling students to analyze themes, cite textual evidence, and engage in discussions. Additionally, oral language practice will build students’ confidence in academic and conversational English.

AP Seminar is a foundational course that engages students in cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Using an inquiry framework, students practice reading and analyzing articles, research studies, and foundational, literary, and philosophical texts; listening to and viewing speeches, broadcasts, and personal accounts; and experiencing artistic works and performances. Students learn to synthesize information from multiple sources, develop their own perspectives in written essays, and design and deliver oral and visual presentations, both individually and as part of a team. Ultimately, the course aims to equip students with the power to analyze and evaluate information with accuracy and precisions to craft and communicate evidence-based arguments.

This course is designed for students who need support to strengthen foundational literacy skills. Through intensive practice and guided instruction, students will develop essential reading strategies to improve comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. The course will also provide opportunities to build oral and academic English skills, fostering confidence and proficiency in both reading and communication. Students will engage with a variety of texts and activities tailored to meet their individual needs, ensuring progress toward grade-level literacy.

Building on the foundational skills developed in ELA Read Write 1, this course is designed for students who are progressing in their reading and literacy development but still require additional support to reach grade-level proficiency. Students will continue to refine key reading strategies such as decoding, fluency, and comprehension while working on expanding their vocabulary and critical thinking skills. In addition to reading practice, this course emphasizes the development of oral and academic English, enabling students to engage more confidently in discussions, written expression, and academic tasks. Through a variety of texts and targeted activities, students will deepen their understanding of language, moving closer to achieving grade-level literacy and preparing for more complex reading and writing challenges.
