IB English A Literature, Year 1 High Level
11th grade

IB Literature HL is a rigorous, two-year course for juniors and seniors that is built on the assumption that literature is concerned with our conceptions, interpretations, and experiences of the world. The study of texts, both literary and non-literary, provides a focus for developing an understanding of how language works to create meaning in a culture, as well as in particular texts. All texts may be understood according to their form, content, purpose and audience, and through the social, historical, cultural, and workplace contexts that produce and value them. Responding to and producing texts promotes an understanding of how language sustains or challenges ways of thinking and being. The study of literature enables an exploration of one of the more enduring fields of human creativity and provides opportunities for encouraging independent, original, critical, and clear thinking. It also promotes respect for the imagination and a perceptive approach to the understanding and interpretation of literary works. Through the study of a wide range of literature, IB Literature HL encourages students to appreciate the artistry of literature and to develop an ability to reflect critically on their reading. Works from various cultures and time periods are studied in their literary and cultural contexts through close study of individual texts and passages and by considering a range of critical approaches. The response to this study of literature is through oral and written communication, thus enabling students to develop and refine their command of language. A state mandated End of Course Test (EOCT) is required and counts toward 20% of the student's 2nd semester grade.
