This course focuses on the acquisition of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language skills. Through extensive reading of literary and informational texts, students develop an understanding of how to cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis, reflection, and research. In conjunction with reading skills, the study of composition includes a focus on argumentative, informative/explanatory, and narrative writing as well as research skills.

This course includes a balance of composition, applied grammar, and both literary and informational texts, with a focus on world literature and documents from world and American history. Students will analyze and respond to increasingly complex texts appropriate for 10th graders. Developing vocabulary, speaking, listening, researching, and test-taking skills are integral parts of the course curriculum.

This class builds and tests students' research and synthesis skills by having students look at real-world issues and arguments through a variety of different lenses and present/defend their findings through both written reports and live multimedia presentations. Due to class rigor and AP Capstone Diploma requirements, this class is offered to incoming sophomores with a 4.0 GPA who will have completed at least one AP course in their freshman year.

Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create media in a variety of forms. In this course, students will extend their senior level reading, writing, speaking and listening skills by developing critical thinking skills around all types of media, understanding how media messages shape our culture and society, evaluating the purpose behind media messages, and practicing the digital citizenship skills for positive participation in our democracy and global economy.

This course applies skills to culminate in creating and developing dramatic writing for theatrical media with special emphasis on film and television. Includes development of 'writerly stance' by reading, viewing, and analyzing tests and visual media from a writer's point of view, with a focus on understanding the construction process and including the application of conventions of standard English grammar and usage. Theatre Arts Literature is embedded within the Dramatic Writing course, providing students with two units of credit, a core LA credit and an elective LA credit.
