This course provides instruction in emergency medical care to persons with severe injuries or illness. Through lectures and hands-on practice, students learn skills for handling medical and trauma care. Students participate in weekend/holiday rotations with community partners to respond to real EMS calls. Teachers collect a fee for BLS card of $$ 800$ . Students must meet several requirements before school begins to maintain eligibility for this course. These requirements include, but are not limited to, clear background check, negative drug screen, specific vaccinations and immunization records, health insurance, and proof of legal immigration status. Details will be provided to students accepted into the program at a mandatory orientation in the spring. Concurrent enrollment in a core course at MCTC. This course is offered at Miller Career and Technology Center. Prerequisites: Principles of Health Science+, Medical Terminology $^ \\star +$ , & Health Science Theory+ \*Students in the Class of 2026 are waived from the Medical Terminology prerequisite requirement. $^ +$ Students in the Class of 2027 and beyond who have only taken two of the three prerequisites may be considered on a deferred basis. Students who have all prerequisites will be considered first. REQUIRED: MCTC Course Request Application - Selecting this course for planning purposes does not guarantee enrollment into the course. Students must be 17 years of age by September 1. Students may sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians exam prior to the age of 18; however, they may not apply for certification in the state of Texas until age 18.
