Mayde Creek High School – Court Systems and Practices

This course provides an introduction to the legal studies industry. In Court Systems & Practices, students learn basics about the criminal justice system, structure of the American court system, prosecution, right to counsel, types and rules of evidence, and sentencing. Students participate in mock trials. In Advanced Legal Systems, students dive deeper into the practical application of the law, as well as civil and criminal procedure. Students gain an understanding of the attorney-client relationship and the importance of confidentiality, discovery, pretrial motions, jury selection, opening statements, direct and cross examinations, and closing arguments. Students will also learn how to evaluate a set of facts and mold it into a coherent trial strategy, learning trial practice from the ground floor. This course is offered at Miller Career and Technology Center. Co-requisite: Advanced Legal Systems REQUIRED: MCTC Course Request Application - Selecting this course for planning purposes does not guarantee enrollment into the course.
