American Sign Language 1 students focus on developing expressive and receptive signing and fingerspelling skills as students learn about the deaf community’s culture. Students will acquire Novice - Mid-High proficiency level skills. 6710VIR - American Sign Language 1 A (Virtual 1.0 credits / Full year course / Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 ASL is a presentation-based program that provides instruction in the principles and methods of communicating with individuals who are deaf. Students are required to do frequent presentations in order to develop productive skills. Students are responsible for ensuring that the college they plan to attend will accept ASL as their foreign language requirement. Level I focuses on developing expressive and receptive signing and finger spelling skills as students learn about the deaf community’s culture, the history of ASL and the development of ASL as a language. Students will acquire Novice - Mid-high proficiency level skills. This course must be completed during the Fall and/or Spring semesters. Students are scheduled in after-school periods to complete the asynchronous course. There is a fee assigned to this course.
