Mar 2026 · 2nd Semester
IB Spanish B HL 9-10 & 11-12 emphasizes authentic communication in Spanish related to the various Spanish and Latin-American literature and other texts which will be read throughout the year. As the students read and study the diverse reading materials, they will be assessed in IB oral proficiencies: the poem, the song, the debate, the role-play, the speech, the interview and the journal entry as well as IB written proficiencies: the poem; the essay, the formal letter, the informal letter, the brochure, the article (column), the interview, the report, the news report, the advertisement, the review (movie critic), and the journal entry. Students need to come to this class prepared to participate in partnered, group and whole-class discussions and conversation role-plays with other students, as well as present information in front of their classmates. The goal is to be able to convey meaningful messages following the appropriate norms of spoken language, including a sense of registers, settings, and adequate vocabulary. The expanded reading of diverse Peninsular and Latin-American literature provide students to the formal literary study that approximates to a course typically taught at the third-year college level. Students will read authentic editions of intrinsic literary value, as well as representative of significant genres and literary periods: Pre-Hispanic, Colonialism, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Modernism, Post-modernism, Vanguard, Magical Realism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Ultraism, Existentialism and Creationism. In this course students will read extensively and in an intensive manner. Students will write cohesive and coherent IB text types in reaction to a text or on a personal, academic, cultural issue, with control of grammar and syntax. The principal objective of IB Spanish B HL 9-10 & 11-12 is to gain an understanding of the people of Latin America today and to develop a sense of solidarity with the hopes, dreams and struggles of the people in Latin America and Latin Americans in the United States. Through readings, lectures and videos students will be analyzing social, political, economic events, religion, arts, and literature from a critical perspective. This course will prepare the students for the IBO HL Curriculum Approach for Cultural Understanding Examination.
