Freshmen at Lincoln often ask, “When do we get to choose what we write about?” or, “When can we write something creative?” With this exciting new elective, we are happy to say the answer to both questions is… “Now!” This class is all about your creativity. It’s a chance to try writing what you want to write in a low stakes, low pressure, and highly supportive environment. It’s a class that will feel more like play than work. This creative writing course is intended for freshmen and sophomores–whether you are simply interested in the idea of creative writing, or you’ve been working on a novel in your spare time, this class is meant to provide a warm space, a fellowship of creatives, a built-in audience from whom you can get supportive and constructive feedback on your work. While writing will be daily there will be no homework or assignments outside of class! It’s one of those classes where you’re having too much fun to feel like you’re learning, yet, by the end, you’ll realize how much your writing has grown. You’ll learn about style and voice, and develop tools and techniques as you read pieces by professional, peers, and local writers. Imagine yourself decades from now, up on a stage. You’re about to receive your first Pulitzer, when a memory strikes you. One day, many years earlier, you were picking your electives for the school year, deciding which box to check. Then you made the decision that became a turning point in your life. You checked the box for Introduction to Creative Writing, and never looked back.
