This course focuses on the study of Britishliterature (England, Scotland Ireland andWales), writing modes and genres, andessential conventions for reading, writing, andspeaking. The students develop anunderstanding of chronological context andthe relevance of period structures in Britishliterature. The students develop anunderstanding of the ways the period ofliterature affects its structure and how thechronology of a work affects its meaning. Thestudents will demonstrate competency inresearch and a variety of writing genres. Thereading, writing, and discussion require seniorlevel depth and maturity and are geared topreparing all students for college.

Focusing on a study of MulticulturalLiterature, students will develop anunderstanding of historical context and therelevance of cultural philosophies that impactthe diverse literary voices of America.Students will develop an understanding ofcultures, origins, and diverse writers, anddetermine how these elements affect themeaning of literature. Students will developan understanding of literature as both aproduct of cultures and as culture-bearersand recognize the commonalities anddifferences among works of multiculturalAmerican Literature.

Students will formalize and extend themathematics that they learned in the middlegrades; deepen and extend understanding of linearrelationships, in part by contrasting them withexponential phenomena, and in part by applyinglinear models to data that exhibit a linear trend;use algebra to deepen and extend understandingof geometric knowledge from priorgrades; and tie together the algebraic and geometricideas studied.

This course provides opportunities for the formalstudy of congruence and similarity. The study ofsimilarity leads to an understanding of right triangletrigonometry and connects to quadratics throughPythagorean relationships. The study of circles usessimilarity and congruence to develop basictheorems relating circles and lines. The need forextending the set of rational numbers arises andreal and complex numbers are introduced so that allquadratic equations can be solved. Quadraticexpressions, equations, and functions aredeveloped, comparing their characteristics andbehavior to those of linear and exponentialrelationships. The link between probability and datais explored through conditional probability. Thehonors course focuses on the standards to preparestudents for a more intense study of mathematics.
