Mythology is a course that focuses on the Greek gods andgoddesses. Heavy emphasis is placed on studies of the god, Zeus,as well as that god's descendants. Students will learn the names ofthe various Greek gods & goddesses, what they rules over, as wellas their rise and fall of power. World Lit/Comp (Y) is a college prep course that focuses on astudy of literary genres; the student develops understanding that theme iswhat relates literature to life and that themes are recurring in the literaryworld. While the focus is argumentative writing, the student will alsodemonstrate competency in a variety of writing genres: argument,informative/explanatory, and narrative. The student will engage inresearch, timed writings, and the writing process.

Honors World Lit/Comp (Y) is an accelerated college prep coursedesigned for the student who has a serious interest in interpretingliterature. It includes literary selections from the entire world of writers topromote proficiency through a variety of writing styles. It stressesorganization and development of written thought. It includes grammar,mechanics and usage, and research skills and activities designed toenhance speaking and listening abilities.

American Lit/Comp (Y) is a college prep class which surveysAmerican works and authors and will provide writing experiences relatedto the interpretation of literature. Grammar, vocabulary development,listening, speaking and research will also be included.

AP Language (Y) is a college level course that conforms to theCollege Board recommendations for the Advanced Placement Languageand Composition Examination. This course focuses on the study ofAmerican literature, embracing its rhetorical nature and recognizing theliterature as a platform for argument. It also emphasizes a variety ofwriting modes and genres and the essential language of reading, writing,and speaking. Emphasis is on critical thinking, reading, and writingthrough the study and discussion of expository, analytical, andargumentative essays. Stresses the connection between reading andwriting mature prose.

British Lit/Comp (Y) is a college prep course which surveys Britishworks and authors and provides writing experiences related to theinterpretations of literature. Grammar, vocabulary development,listening, speaking and research will also be included.

Multicultural Lit/Comp (Y) focuses on world literature by andabout people of diverse ethnic backgrounds. Students explore themes oflinguistic and cultural diversity by comparing, contrasting, analyzing, andcritiquing writing styles and universal themes. The students' writeexpository, analytical, and response essays. A research component iscritical. The students observe and listen critically and respondappropriately to written and oral communication. The students understandand acquire new vocabulary and use it correctly in reading, writing, andspeaking. The following cultures will be studied: American, African-American, Mexican, Asian, and Indian. Students will develop or gain adeeper level of cultural tolerance as they learn about the various customs,traditions, religions, etc. of other cultures.

AP English Literature & Comp (Y) is a college-level coursethat focuses on the reading and analysis of literary works and the writingof critical essays. Each semester is designed as an accelerated andenriching experience in analytical and critical thinking. It also pre-supposes that a student is proficient in composition. It is geared to thestudent who aspires to take the AP exam.

Advanced Composition/Dramatic Writing for Film,Television & Theater (Y) applies skills to culminate in creatingand developing dramatic writing for theatrical media with specialemphasis on film and TV. Includes development of "writerly stance" byreading, viewing, and analyzing texts and visual media from a writer'spoint of view, with focus on understanding the construction process andapplying the conventions of standard English grammar and usage.Course receives dual credit (1 credit for ELA and 1 credit for Fine Arts).There is an Honors level to this course.

Journalism/Yearbook: Annual I-II (Y) are courses that explore journalisticwriting through the analysis of yearbooks.It concentrates on the purpose, influence Iand structure, and language use. It also IIcovers news gathering, ethics, copy writing,editing and revising. The course includeslayout, circulation and production as minoraspects.

Foundations of Algebra (Y) The Foundations ofAlgebra course is designed to fill in algebra-ready math gapsfor students to be successful in Algebra I. The course consistsof the prerequisite skills that students need to master forsuccess. The modules also contain the standards from thefirst 2 units of Algebra I.

Algebra I (Y) is the first course in a sequence of threerequired high school courses designed to ensure career andcollege readiness. The course represents a discrete study ofalgebra with correlated statistics applications.
