Students will use methods of analyzing and critically viewing several films from a variety of genres, time periods, and countries. They will study topics such as plot and sequencing, acting and character, scriptwriting, setting and props, camera work, sound and light, and other practical and technical skills of production. They will present their analyses of film segments, research and write a rationale for a documentary, and finally produce an original short film. Students will learn to appreciate and understand film as a complex form of art and develop the ability to formulate stories and ideas in film terms. The curriculum, including films, is cycled over 2 years in order to allow students to take this course for a second year. IB SL Assessments: Standard Level assessments include a Film Portfolio in which student undertake a variety of film-making exercises, a Textual Analysis where students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of how meaning is constructed in film, and a Comparative Study where students carry out research into a chosen area of film. IB HL Assessments: Higher Level (HL) assessments include all of the SL assessments as well as a Collaborative Film project where students work collaboratively to plan and create an original completed film of 7 minutes.
